Description
Fresh from a Canadian tour and their performance at the highly respected Festival Voix d’Amériques in Montreal three of Australia's finest performance poets hit New York City for a special one night only appearance at the stellar Bowery Poetry Club.
Also appearing will be two of New York's finest
Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz and Shappy Seasholtz.

A night of spoken word, sass, spacemen, music and the word 'moist'.

About the Australian poets:
Emilie Zoey Baker has been a professional artist, writer and performer for over fifteen years. She recently received a scholarship to PoetryLab at the University of Wollongong to work on her second collection of poetry. She was the winner of the Nimbin Performance Poetry World Cup in 2006, a member of the winning team for the 2004 Melbourne Writers’ Festival poetry slam, and holds slam titles around the country, including 2002 Melbourne Erotic Slam champion. In 2009 will be State coordinater for the National Australian Slam run by The National State Library. She has featured at many venues and festivals including the 2007 Melbourne International Arts Festival (‘Voiceprints’ at La Mama), the Sydney Opera House as part of the NightWords Festival and a recent tour of New Zealand. She has been published nationally and internationally and was the producer of You Talkin To Me?, a Melbourne spoken word and music compilation CD. Her first collection of poetry, She Wore The Sky On Her Shoulders, was published in 2003 by Hit and Miss Publications. She has appeared on international radio and television and is just downright fabulous.
“This is great material ¬– find me one person who writes like Emilie and I will run naked through downtown San Diego – this is exactly what I am looking for – her work is fun to read and at the same time the content is very, very serious and makes for deep material to reflect upon. I have never seen such a perfect combination of these two elements in my life!” August Highland, Editor M.A.G (USA)
‘Hilarious’-Australian Book Review

Sean M Whelan has been a writer and performer of spoken word, poetry and short stories for almost ten years. His written work has been widely published both locally and overseas. His spoken word performances have been broadcast on radio RRR and JJJ, Australia’s National Youth Radio Station. In 2003 he traveled to New York as part of an Australia Council grant to perform at the launch of Short Fuse, a global collection of Fusion Poetry.
Since 2005 Sean has worked extensively with Melbourne rock band The Mime Set. Their debut performance was for the 2005 Melbourne Fringe Festival with a show titled Death To Your Dreams. It was a collaboration of poetry and music. Since then they have written two more Fringe Festival shows together, LCUK: Falling In and Out of Luck in 2006 and Sweet Cowboy in 2007. Sweet Cowboy was also co-written by Emilie Zoey Baker. In 2007 Sean was invited to perform at the Utan Kayu International Literary Biennale in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Sean also co-ordinates one of Melbourne's most popular regular spoken word events called Babble, held at Bar Open, Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. His first collection of poetry was published in 2003 by Hit & Miss publications titled Love is the First Hate. In 2008 his second book of poetry titled Tattooing the Surface Of The Moon is published by Small Change Press.

Justin Ashworth has released two independent CDs and a book of poetry, composed music for several short films, dance works and visual art installations. His spoken word performance is a mix of dark ambient music, with haikus as a mantra, and a surrealist tendency. In 2005 Justin published his first book of poetry and CD of spoken word called Fleeting Poetry. It was a collection of short poems about love and death coffee and the laundromat. It came with a CD of spoken word set to dreamy ambient music.
Justin's work also appeared in local independent poetry magazine Mod_Piece, and on a compilation CD/DVD put out by Melbourne's Electundra Festival. In 2007, Justin released the CD, New Music to Fall Asleep to... An electro-acoustic music and poetry exploration of the surrealist state of mind, and the potential for lullabies to invoke more than just sleep. It combined ambient soundscapes, odd rhythms, and a poetic imagination. In March 2008 the project toured Australia nationally. As a guest musician and/or poet, Justin has been Involved in acclaimed Melbourne Fringe Festival shows "Seamstress" (2008), "Kunst Ist Scheisse" (2006), "Extreme Spoken Word" (2005) and Conan the Bubbleman's "Ephemera" (2003).

And our special NY guests.

SHAPPY SEASHOLTZ is a National Forensics Champion, a National Poetry Slam Champion and two-time Slammaster's Slam Champion. He's toured the country with Lollapalooza and the SlamAmerica Bus Tour, has appeared on "Russell Simmon's Def Poetry" on HBO as well as in the first CNN report on Poetry Slams in 1991. When not on the road, he can found at the Bowery Poetry Club, where he serves as head bartender and host of their weekly Poetry Slam, NYC-Urbana.

CRISTIN O'KEEFE APTOWICZ is a New York City-based poet and author. Founder and host of the three-time National Poetry Slam Championship venue, NYC-Urbana, Cristin has authored four books of poetry and has performed throughout the U.S. and Australia. Her fourth book of poetry, "Oh Terrible Youth" was published by The Wordsmith Press in June 2007 and her first book of nonfiction, "Words In Your Face: A Guided Tour Through Twenty Years of the New York City Poetry Slam" was published in 2008 by Soft Skull Press.

Hello, Poetry Pilgrims!

There is much to be thankful for this Tuesday!

First of all, it's Urbana's 11th Anniversary! There will be classic
audio and video clips through out the evening. Since there is no way
to and top last year's 10 year and Words In Your Face blow out, we
ain't even gonna try...

. . .OR ARE WE?!?!?

This year is Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz's 30th BIRTHDAY! Cristin will be
our SPECIAL GUEST during WORDSHOP this week as she is interviewed
about Words In You Face and her involvement with slam over the past 12
years! THIS ALSO MEANS-FREE FOOD-as there will be a reception in
Cristin's honor! So get there early!

We will also be having a roast and toast in Cristin's honor! I can't
get into details about WHO will be performing but let's just say some
of NYC'S SLAM LEGENDS will be performing for our beloved Urbana founder!

As if all of this were not enough, we are also having our DIVA SLAM
which will determine who we will be sending to The World of Women
Poetry Slam in Detroit next year! Vying for the top slot will be-

Akua!
Jeanann Verlee!
Eboni!
Arianne Benford!
Nicole Homer!

So come on out for a overflowing cornucopia of poetic pleasures!

My friends,

Thank you for coming out last week and making our first semi-finals a
HUGE SUCCESS! We had a full house and Andrea Gibson gave a rousing
feature! Our open mic overfloweth with talent and we congratulate Ion
who has won a spot in our FINALS and took home ONE-MILLION DOLLARS!
Our second quarter will start on November 11th so git to writing,
slammeroos!

This week's slam is the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED SLAM and if you want to
get in on the fun you will need POLITICAL POEMS preferably about our
soon to be ex-President G.W.BUSH!!! Obama, Palin and McCain are all
fair game since the next time we slam there will be a new president!
This is a "theme slam" so ALL RULES ARE OFF! Costumes, music and cover
poems are all fine tonight as long as they are POLITICAL in nature!
America will decide whether the BLUE STATE POETS or the RED STATE
POETS will win, my friends!

And who better than AMERICAN PATRIOT-JOHN S. HALL as our feature?

As a solo recording artist, and as lyricist and lead vocalist of King
Missile , John S. Hall has recorded three CDs for Atlantic Records and
eight independent CDs. He has appeared numerous times on MTV and was
featured in PBS's The United States of Poetry and HBO's Def Poetry
Jam. He is the author of one book of poetry, Jesus Was Way Cool (Soft
Skull Press), an has been anthologized in a number of other books.
John has toured extensively in North America and Europe, both as a
spoken word artist and with his band. He lives in New York City.

Feel free to RVSP (and spread the word) on the
Mission Accomplished Slam via our FACEBOOK EVENTS PAGE here:

(AND I'll also be hosting an open-mic at the BPC on election night Nov
4th for a live election results show called EXIT POLLS so get to
writing, you Godless liberal or heartless conservative! Your country
needs YOU!)
