What's new? Here's what's new with me. I am obsessed wiith Iced Tea lately! I can't get enough of that sweet, sweet stuff! I'm not even sure how it began, but I'm pretty sure it was after having a glass of perfect Iced Tea at Ed and Jeannie's. It drives Cristin nuts! I am particulary into Brisk with lemon. I used to hate it! Is this what grown-up's drink? We got to see Ed and Jeannie's new place in Philly. It's huge and everything is brand new! Of course, everyone is calling them the New York couple so it'll be interesting to see how civil things become! They are central to everything and they are part of of cool carshare program. I got to have an awesome cheesesteak with Birch Beer! They also had a pretty good comic shop with an impressive quarter bin. We hit all types of shops. Cristin gave a lecture on the UPenn campus on Sept. 11th which I posted here previously. It was great and fun to watch Cristin perform some of my poems.

Man, we have been having Urbana on Tuesdays lately and they have been really crappy crowd-wise! Please check out our myspace page and help us spread the word! www.myspace.com/urbanapoetryslam. We have a great line-up this season. We just gotta get asses in seats!

I'm going to be in Chicago September 27th thru Sept 30th for the 15 year anniversary of Chicago Comics and Quimby's! I can't wait! I'll get to see all of my old nerdy co-workers!

When I get back on Saturday the 30th, Cristin and I will be hosting Leticia's book realease/birthday party at the BPC! It will be a blast and Cristin will probally end up in a rap battle at some point!

We ended up with a free Nintendo DS(from Ed) and we LOVE it! I feel like I could be using it as mobile internet device. Is that true? I need to investigate!

Found some cool stuff lately, a $50 Spirit Archive HC by Will Eisner for $10 at our local thrift. Some vintage children's books for 50 cents and some dog racing forms from the 40's at the Big Apple Con yesterday. Also found a campaign pin for someone named SHAPP at bookstore in Philly. I also got a Last Supper wooden plaque at a yard sale for $2 but Cristin thought I paid too much for it. I was being neighborly, nay, Christ-like, for overpaying!

Life is pretty sweet, like Brisk Iced Tea with Lemon!

From THE DAILY PENNSLYVANIAN

Poet commemorates 9/11 in verse
The author of four books recited works by New York artists affected by the attacks
Cara Bumgardner

Poet and screenwriter Cristin Aptowicz returned to her home city of Philadelphia yesterday to commemorate the emotions and events of Sept. 11th on its five-year anniversary.

After the attacks, Aptowicz said, Manhattan's Lower East Side poetry community came together to serve as a haven for those affected by the terrorist attacks.

She recounted the "genuine" and "desperate" pieces that followed the tragedy and said that most of the poets barely remember the writing process "because the poems were written out of shock."

Aptowicz, who lives in lower Manhattan, said many came to post-9/11 poetry slams simply "to hear their pain echoed in someone else's verse." Others attended in order to find relief from the otherwise dismal New York City, which had become "a symbol for war," she said.

Many New Yorkers shared the sentiment that their once-invincible city had "shed its heroic facade and become harrowed," she added.

She recited selections from a collection of New York City poets, including one poet's recollection that the "city seemed broken, like a heart."

Aptowicz also noted a newfound sense of community and patriotism that she said emerged from the ashes of the city.

One poem she read said that "we don't live in America - America lives in us."

A number of the poems she recited were humorous, one entitled "America Kicks Ass" and another, "Attack of the Clowns," that demonstrated the various ways poets dealt with the tragedy.

Reciting the poem of a prominent Palestinian-American poet, she shed light on the opposition that people of other cultures faced in the aftermath of the attack.

"Evil," she read, "is not as simple as a flag."

To end her presentation, Aptowicz urged the audience to "affirm life.

"America, the phoenix, has risen," she said.

A Central High School graduate, Aptowicz was selected to attend the Governor's School in Pennsylvania, which her mother Maureen O'Keefe Aptowicz said "launched her into her career."

Beyond writing four poetry books, she has founded the three-time National Poetry Slam Championship Venue, NYC Urbana, and was awarded the $10,000 grand prize at the 2003 Philadelphia Film Festival.
