SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Thursday, June 29, 2006

Well, Caitlin & Leo's BIG DAY is upon us! Cristin and I have been getting ready for the wedding in Anapolis this Saturday. Cristin has a beautiful green dress and found a matching tie for me to wear with my go-to Hugo Boss suit. We will look awesome. I am taking care of the last minute packing and stuff before we get on a train to Philly to meet up with Kevin and Katie. I'll be pouring champaign at the reception and me and Cristin are in charge of the sparkler parade. The weather looks like it's going to be okay. I just hope it's not too humid!

I worked Monday and Tuesday nights and won't be back til next Thursday! Yikes! We are closed on July 4th. After the wedding we get to go to our cat-sitting gig! We'll get to see the fireworks on the roof of a 32-story building! Plus, we'll get to de-compress from the wedding in an air-conditioned condo with cable!

Once again we had another awesome double-date Wednesday! We went out to Brooklyn to see Maggie Estep and her partner John and thier dogs, Spike and Candy! Thai food and Scrabble! I think we a theme going here!

I went to the Big Apple comic con last Saturday after having lunch with the Aptowicz clan. I saw Rowdy Roddy Piper, Captain Lou Albino, Robert Vaughn and Steven Segal grimmly signing autographs for fanboys. Got a bunch of trade paperbacks for 75% off and all of the old animated Star Trek Episodes, all of Tex Avery's cartoons and a documentary about Freakies cereal, plus a stack of cool obscure comics. No one had t-shirts or affordable vintage toys. I saw a Mork and his space egg still in the original package for $50! I think all the vintage toy guys only do eBay these days.

Looking forward to seeing Superman Returns in 3-D at IMAX! Watched a great documentary called Look Up In The Sky by Ken Burns and Bryan Singer. I got it at Best Buy for like $10 and highly reccomend it before or after you see this year's model!

Have a great patriotic weekend and don't blow yerselves up!

Following Mike Henry's orders!

It's that time again, folks.

If you're on a team going to this year's NPS, send your
30-WORD-OR-LESS
bios here: http://www.austinslam.com/nps06/index.php?name=TeamBios or

by email to adam (at) destructibleheart dot com by Wednesday, June

That's now one week.

PLEASE, submit all of your team members in one document (.doc or in
an
email is fine) -- Individual bios will result in confusion and will
not

You are poets. It's your job to say it with less.

Please, please, pass this message around to every source you have.
Repost on LiveJournal and MySpace. Email it off to wherever you see
fit.

UGH! Summer's here like a greasy, wet, sweatshirt! Al Gore is just shaking his head somewhere! Plus, it seems I have some sort of summer cold or at least a tickle in my throat. Joy!

The week started off nice enough weather-wise and then just got oppressive by the weekend. In fact, Cristin and I retreated to the air-conditioned climate of our local cafe and sat and read the paper, played Sorry! and both of us got some writing done! We even managed to meet the owner! Ah, Astoria!

We had another smashing double-date Wednesday with Taylor and Marie-Elizabeth. Sushi and Scrabble, which we hadn't done in a long time! We got to see the weddding pictures and catch up.

Thursday was the Nerd Slam and once again the attendance was not what I had hoped for. The show itself was pretty good and I got to give away a bunch of swag. Thanks to Reid who brought a bunch of stuff to send over to Iraq. I have a feeling I won't do one next year. Maybe just put a show together without all the slamminess. It just doesn't seem to want to work in NYC. Oh well, Nerd Slam at Nationals will be awesome!

We get to cat-sit this weekend and I plan on checking out the Big Apple Comic-Con this Saturday. Cait and Leo's wedding is almost upon us!

I promise to jazz up the site soon! Really!

What a crazy week we had last week!

Monday was the O'Debbie Awards. The O'Debra Twins run the most awesome open-mic in town! It's a crazy mix of comics, singer-songwriters, poets and art stars. Once a year they do the whole red carpet thing and hand out hand-made statuettes (this year was gold baby bottles) and give awards in goofy catagories. I won for "Most Faked Pregnancies". Cristin did snips for tips and got to cut Jason Trachtenberg's hair! We also had dinner with The Minister o' Fun himself, Gary Glazner who was in town all week long!

Tuesday was 6-6-6 and we had another big Art Star event which was a fund-raiser for Rev. Jen's next issue of Art Star Scene (ASS magazine). They sold satanic baked goods and a bunch of folks came in costume (Anton LeVey, Jesus with devil horns, Carrie) then it was Andrew Katz's b-day so The NYC Howl played followed by an awesome 10 piece combo that rocked the house. Moonie helped behind the bar and even then I made great tip$! Plus, the apocolypse was a no-show!

Wednesday-Our double-date Wednesdays continue to be awesome! This week, despite the lousy rain, we went to Pizzaria Uno with Ed and Jeannie and saw The Break-Up (it was date night after all) and we were all pleasantly surprized that it didn't suck! Vince Vaughn is great and the movie has a great supporting cast. Some pretty good yuks but not as funny as 40 yr. Old Virgin. Plus, we actually got a cab home!

Thursday- a nicely paced night at the BPC. We had a book release for Mom Egg (poetry by moms) which had a big spread of free food, a lesbian comic who brought a nice crowd, muMs did a short set then Andy Friedman did his weekly show. Again, ok tip$.

Friday- another nicely paced night at the BPC. Eliel's show did really well! The hip-hop show after was pretty lame so I let Diane make some money and helped out as needed. Cristin brought Cait and Leo by after they saw Prairie Home Companion which they said was just "okay".

Saturday- Me and Cristin went out for brunch at Neptune's and then walked to the movies cuz it was so nice out! We stopped by a yard sale where I found a bunch of old kid's books! (Lassie, Tarzan, Ewoks, Clash of the Titans) I took home an armload for $4! Then I finally got to see X3! Again, it was way better than the reviews made it out to be. Lots of unexpected death scenes! If you haven't seen it yet make sure you stay til the credits are over! After we picked up spaghetti fixin's and watched The Player.

Sunday I went to the MOCCA art and comics festival! It's all small and alternative presses. I saw Sam Henderson whose illustrations grace my Kapow! books and this here web-site! He drew a picture of me in my King Nerd scetchbook Hannah made for me, so did Matt Feazell (Cynical-Man). I picked up a bunch of cool stuff that I used to be able to find at Quimby's and Chicago Comics but not so much here in NYC. I met David Malki who does these amazing strips called The Annotated Wondermark where he uses 19th Century clip art. He also is the master-mind behind the whole taking the word baloons away from Garfield strips which actually makes it a funnier comic strip! I bought his Garfield (is not funny) tee-shirt. I got an advanced copy of Johnny Ryan's Comic Book Holocaust which had me and Cristin laughing out loud! I also picked up a bunch of Clutch(a comic diary) the last 2 SPX anthologies, a bunch of Nancy pins and postcards, a self-published comic journalism zine called Comic Foundry, Matt Feazell's new book and some mini-comics. I also got an awesome t-shirt that says "MY POWER DROID HAS A POSSE!" talk about nerdo obscuro! At one point, I literally ran into Art Spiegleman! I also saw a great slideshow about obscure comics from 1900-1969. After that I went to see Gary's last gig at the BPC and then met up with Cristin for an Urbana team meeting. The team is really working hard and is going to shake things up at Nationals! We came home and watched the Tony's (Cristin watched, I mostly went through all the stuff I got at MOCCA). I also dropped off what was left of my Nerd Slam fliers at the fest. It's this Thursday and it's shaping up nicely!

The beer garden is crammed with World Cuppers! New Yorkers-keep an eye out for drunk soccer fans this week! They could be anywhere, anytime!

Hey, gang!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but it's been pretty hectic here at the Shaptowicz compound!
First of all, our benefit for Anne from Magic Hat went really well despite the fact that I kinda forgot about Memorial Day weekend. The bar was slow all weekend. Still, we had a lively crew on Saturday and raised like $600 just from raffle tix and goofy auctions alone! Cristin and I scored some nice fleeces. Cristin cut hair and used her tip money to buy raffle tickets. I hosted the live show. Sometimes I feel like I am living in a musical. "Let's get the gang together and put on a show!" Anyways, I hope Anne is doing all right.

Still, tricking out the new computer! Been downloading my CD collection, I painted the edges of the monitor black for optimal viewing of movies and I finally found a game pad for all the video games Ernie loaded me up with. Soon, I'm be scanning in a bunch of cool stuff I found in my old scrapbook from the 80's! I really want to trick out this site and start my own FANBOYS site when the hype hits.

We kicked off our double-date Wednesdays this week with Stefan and Irene. We went to an awesome place in Astoria call Wave Thai. It was dee-lish and reasonably priced. Afterwards, we got ice cream and played Shout At The Movies.

Cristin noticed I've been getting a lot of hits lately from GameTap. Hello, video game nerds!
