GOD BLESS MAGIC HAT!!!
That's me and Moonshine with Alan the owner of MAGIC HAT brewery in Burlington, VT! We had a great time hanging out and drinking with all of our beer selling and beer brewing pals! Ann went out of her way to make us feel welcome and introduced us to all kinds of folks. We met Sebby from Rouge beer and she took the picture above. She showed us around town when Ann had to do her businessy stuff. Friday there was a huge Antibalas concert at Higher Ground where I encountered one of my web-fans, Shaun who claims he's been a reader from the very start after seeing me in Boston in 2002! After the concert we partied at the Smart Suites. There was a Madri Gras parade on Saturday during a crazy snowstorm! Afterwards, me and Moonie hit The Crow and North County bookstores. I found a children's book about a doxie named Noodle for Cristin and I found a cool book of cartoons about life in suburbs from the 50's and a Tom & Jerry Big Little Book. There was a VIP party at Halverson's and then we hit a cool bar called The 3 Needs and then some bar that had corn dogs and gravy fries! The next day we got a tour of the brewery and we got set up with a couple of growlers Magic Hat to take home. It was a really cool and relaxing weekend! Now I have my birthday week to look forward to! I have to work tomorrow for the Pretty in Pink Tribute and then we have the Piscies Party on Saturday for all my fellow Pisciean co-workers! Me and Cristin are having dinner tonight and I get to open some presents!

The shortest month of the year is the busiest for your pal Shappy! Thursday I hosted Urbana and we had a great feature-Eric Darby. I like that Eric doesn't need to yell and shout to get his point across and his chapbook is a work of art. We had the Play-Offs (one act play slam) after and it was busy. The next night was INSANE!
We figured we'd have a nice crowd for Andy Friedmanan's CD release party but not a raging crowd of literary party people. I had to run across the street and perform some poems for the Hungry March Band show at CBGB's. I returned to one of the scariest hip-hop shows I've ever worked. The entire crowd seemed tweaky and ready to fight. There was definitely some bad vibes in the air. Me and Diane O'Debra sallied forth and ended up making a s-load of money for us and the club.
It wore me out but Cristin let me rest up because Kevin and Katie were coming out for dinner and we tickets for a play called ELLIOT-A SOLDIER'S FUGUE which was one of the best pieces of theatre I've seen in a long time! Then we walked down to the BPC for a nitecap. Cristin and I headed back to Astoria after cat-sitting all week and had a chicken nugget snack!
The next day Cristin had brunch with her pal Meg and I attended the NYC Slam Summit where all of the folks running slam series in the New York area got together to discuss all kinds of rules and stuff. Then we had little time to relax.
Today I got a call from Ed and Jeanie asking if I wanted to go to Target. Answer-YES!
I'm afraid I went a little nuts but I couldn't help it! I got to buy in bulk and not carry back myself! I bought 20 rolls of TP for the first time in my life! And a case of soda! Also I paid too much for a pair of pants, found some cheap DVD's and the new Wacky Packages are out! I got 5 packs NO DOUBLES!
This week I work Tuesday and Thursday and I fly to Vermont with Moonshine for Magic Hat Mardi Gras! We get a free hotel suite full of free beer. Free meals and a tour of the brewery. Moonie is from Vermont and his family has a farm there so I'm bringing back meat and cheese!
Next Tuesday is my 37th birthday! If you'd like to get me something I made a wish list at Amazon which you can see here.
If that doesn't work, just search for the SHAPPY BIRTHDAY wishlist!
Cristin isn't feeling so well so I'm off to tend to her every need!

Now, I have often be accused of being a boastful uncle -- but can I help it if my niece and neph just happen to be the CUTEST and MOST AWESOME TOTS in the known galaxies?!
If you thou has any doubts, I issue ye this challenge :
Lock you gaze upon this trio of pics, and see if you can make it through all three with out saying "Awwwww!" once!
Tis IMPOSSIBLE!!

I mean, look them having fun in this basket! Knowing that this picture exists is giving generations of cocker spaniel puppies bad self esteem!
And sure, looking cute in basket might be easy! But can your tots nail looking cute under an OFFICE CHAIR?

Cuz my tots can! And look at niecey Taylor hamming it!!

And this pic is very special to their Uncle Shappy -- for I am imagining Luke in 25 years, staring at this picture to figure out which toy to bid on next on Ebay!
Oh, the pain of seeing my mint-in-package Oscar Goldman doll in an old xmas pic! How that doll haunts me!
THANX FOR SENDING CRISTIN THE PICS, KATIE AND CAL! AND KEEP THEM COMING!!

Dog Day Afternoon!
Me and Cristin spent an entire day looking at dogs, petting dogs, talking about dogs, taking pictures of dogs and LOVING DOGS! And yet, we don't have a dog! It's the greatest paradox (or as we like to say "pair o' dachs")of all times! We had a great day watching the champs at the Westminster show at Madison Square Garden! There was even a Dog Expo across the street where I normally go for the Big Apple Comic-con which was a strange melding of my obsessions! We also used our Olive Garden gift cards for a fine Valentine's supper! Now we are cat-sitting and pretending we live in Manhattan! I promise to put up some pix as soon as they are available! Hope everyone had a great Valentine's day!

Uh. . .
Well, I tanked the second night of IWPS! I took a 12 and a 11 which pretty much sealed my doom! I'm afraid that this slam vet wasn't up to the task this go around. Not that I didn't get lots of props from fellow poets and fans I didn't even know I had. The winner was Mighty Mike McGee, who won after fellow finalist Joaquin took a time penality after going 2 seconds over! I also suffered from time penalties both rounds. My internal clock is off after 3 years not being on a team. To make matters worse, I fucked up my airline tickets AGAIN! I guess because I'm so used to booking on-line from NY, I booked my return flight from La Guardia to Charlotte! That mistake cost me plenty!
Cristin was secretly asked to host the finals and flew out on Saturday and did a great job!! Many slammers in attendance said it was the best final round of slam poetry ever witnessed! In fact, it was the first time ever in poetry slam history that the final round was run by nothing but women running the penultimate say-so! Cristin was soooooooooooo cute and on target! I love my poetry paramour!
So, I had a good time and stuff but my inability to properly book airline tickets on-line made this trip cost about a month's worth of rent while my rent was due! So if you'd like a old slammer to appear at your college or venue I am AVAILABLE!
Or you could slip a fiver in my birthday card (Feb 28) or buy my shit off this here webpage, that would AWESOME too, true believers!!
Despite my finacial downfall, it was one of the coolest poetry slams I've been to! Terry Creech and crew threw an awesome poetry party! I have been inspired by my fellow poets to get off my ass and write some new shit, and that, my friends, makes it all worthwhile!

Greetings from the International World Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC!!!
I am in 41st place! Hooray! (out of 72)
Because of a time penality and a bunch of ties I could've been in 8th place! Can you believe how screwy the math is at this slam? You can't really stratagize in a 12 poet round. You just gotta throw your words in the air and see how they land. Of course evrything will change after round 2 tonight! I'm still in the game! I took 5th in my 1st round and 8th in my 2nd which gives me a 13 combined score if my combined score is somwhere in the 5-8 range tonight, there's a chance I could get into finals. So may the force be with me!
More importantly I'm having a blast hanging out with the poetry pals! First of all I should tell you I almost didn't make it out here! I booked my flight for next weekend! Thankfully, I caught a ride with Rachel McKibbens and Dawn Saylor. Nothing like a 13 hour car ride! Thanks, gals! I was able to get a cheap flight out on Sunday and I'll get to exchange my mistake tix for my trip to Austin. Whew!
I have been unable to find any cool nerd shops in this burg. Tod Caviness found out where the comic shop is so we're gonna field trip it tomorrow around noon.
The food here is AWESOME and the bar prices aren't too bad. Last night Zork bought pizza for everybody at what I guess is the official poet hang-out Fox & Hound. It's fun being one of the few funny poets here. You know I really dig freaking out the squares!
I'll post tonight's drama tomorrow!
