Shappy Halloweenie!
Aaaaah! Such a relaxing weekend with my beloved snoo! Thursday we had Derick Brown at Urbana and it was a great show! I came home and watched the extra features on my SITH DVD until Cristin got in from the airport. We re-packed and slept for 5 hours or so and then headed to Penn Station for a scenic trip on Amtrak which took us right by the Hudson and we saw all the lovely fall colors.
The innkeeper from the Hudson City B&B picked us up and brought his poodle, Jacob, with him to Cristin's delight! He was a real sweet pup and was friendly with all the guests at the B&B! We got a really nice room with a big bathtub! The innkeeper also had a huge video library and we could watch whatever we wanted!
We had frites and mussels and steak for our first dinner and then came home and conked out super early! We had pancakes for brekkie and then went out to find treasures in the many antique shops of Hudson. Cristin managed to find some doxie cards and a doxie card holder! I found a vintage Viewmaster with 4 packages of Disneyland reels from the 50's! They still had the cellophane on 'em! We also found an unopened Q-Bert playing card game for a dollar! Cristin found a purse she liked and 2 ties, including dentist's tie with smiling cartoon teeth on it for less than $2. I also found a New Yorker cartoon album from 1950-55 and a book of poems illustrated by George Herriman (Krazy Kat).
The best find was an old printer's drawer that we plan to fill with tiny bric-a-brac and, of course, tiny dachshunds. Every store we went in had a dog in it! Two snoo's were in pup heaven! We had lunch in a boxcar diner (biscuits & gravy-at last!) and dinner in a fun Mexican joint. We could see the Milky Way at night the sky was so clear and the weather was crisp and lovely!
I got a peck of apples at a farmer's market and chased some of those apples down the street when Cristin tripped on a step which of course meant that the rest of the trip she teased me about how much I cared about those apples instead of my fallen girlfriend of FIVE YEARS! Sunday we hung out at the Muddy Cup cafe and read all the papers and ran into Chavisa (a NYC poet now living in Hudson). The train ride back was just as beautiful and we had dinner at Neptune's.
Now I'm getting ready to make supper and then off to the BPC to work the Halloween party with Moonshine! I hope I make some scary tips!

It's been pretty crazy busy this past week and I'm busy going into this next week as well but I have next weekend to look forward to cuz that's when me and Cristin go to Hudson for our relaxing 5 year anniversary trip! This past Friday was insanely busy at the BPC. We had the Mr. Lower East Side contest (congrats Jeff Mac!) followed by a big ska show which meant the bar was slammed from 7-3:30 AM! I pretty much made the rent! Wednesday Cristin and I went to the MoMA to see Elizabeth Murray's retrospective. It was great and my first visit to the MoMA. It was like being in a movie, seeing all of my BPC co-workers and various NY pals. It was really fun. Tonight I host a hip-hop show at the BPC and tomorrow I got to go to a bowling alley in Chelsea to get some kind of bar training thingy and then I plan to see Derrick Brown at Bar 13. Cristin is in L.A. all week long so I'll be lonely til Friday!

Uh, I came in last in the semi-finals. Which proves that slam audiences need some education. Speaking of education, Cristin is in Nebraska where my cult status remains STRONG! Here's my ATTACK OF THE CLONES POEM for all of my Nebraskian fans!
George Bush Please stop the war Because I hate it I hate the war I hate all wars Except for Star Wars Which totally RULES! Like a dictator rules Which is what you are, George A dick-tater You are evil-like Darth Vader But you don't look as cool as Darth Vader He wore a black mask-like death Which is what you are, George Death You wear a mask to hide your evil Only it is not as cool and shiny as Darth Vader's It is chipped and dented Like the Millennium Falcon Han Solo used to drive the Millennium Falcon Until Boba Fett turned him in to Jabba the Hut for a bounty Jabba the Hutt is a fat, slimy businessman who lives in a cave Like Dick Cheney Jabba the Hutt surrounded himself with bounty hunters and evil robots and naked alien chicks Just like you and Dick Cheney George Bush doesn't care about Sand People! And I hate to ruin the whole Star Wars Trilogy for you George but in the end-the evil empire is toppled! And although I bet you are thinking I am talking about Iraq, I'm actually talking about YOU and your administration, George! The rebels win, George! Those stupid peace-loving rebels WIN! And you can appoint as many Jar Jar Binks want in the senate but it's not gonna stop the rebels from WINNING! We got Yoda on our side, bitch! All you got is some smelly old man in a robe who kills people-like your dad! Which is why I love Star Wars But not wars in General... Grievous?

Hey! I'm in the Semi-Finals! Come see me spit sum ill rhymes!
The first quarter of competition at the Urbana Poetry Slam is over and that means it is time for the semifinals! Thursday night, October 20th, you will hear from the following six poets as they vie for the honor of the first spot in next spring's POETRY SLAM FINAL:
€ August € Bamboo MC € Darian € Nicole € Omar € Shappy
Semifinals are always amazing shows! All of the poets have prevailed in earlier slams, AND they now have a 3-minute time limit to contend with (with a 20-second grace period)! BANG! BOOM! POETRY!
As if the slam itself were not enough to bring you out, the featured poet is none other than 2004 Individual Champion Sonya Renee! Sonya is an Urbana favorite (and NOT because her time penalty against us in Albuquerque meant Urbana was able to advance to the semifinals!). She is a brilliant performer.
So come on out. Chad will be emceeing this special event, and everyone will be there! Don't forget that admission to semifinals is $10. The sign-up list for the eight-poet open mic opens at 6:30 pm and closes at 7:00 pm. Hope you can make it!
Here's the skinny:

One day the rain will come. . .
It rained for a week solid here in NYC. It was like Blade Runner all week long! Here's a water-logged blog of how I spent my week between raindrops-
Monday- Went to O'Debra Twins and performed a piece about soda can bombs in the subway which I eventually turned into a slam poem for Thursday. Got to see a video of the Giggle-Fits (Moonie, Sean T, Aric & Liz of the BPC) show I attended on Friday after a private party at the club. The Giggle-Fits are raw and sleazy and Moonshine is a natural rock-n-roll frontman. Fun stuff.
Tuesday-Last night for Red Bastard and Deenie Nast's comedic 2 for 1! Red Bastard had to face his toughest crowd, a bunch of wise-ass 8 year olds who called him a "gay rapist"! From the mouth of babes! He eventually got the crowd back and the kids tamed but not after a lot of spanking and name-calling. Deenie's character isn't very kid friendly to begin with so she didn't have to put up with the brats. After a punkjazz combo we dived into Nite Cap Karaoke and it went pretty well.
Wednesday-Out into the rain again this time to get some corkboards to get the two snoo's house in order! After much searching in Bed Bath & Beyond I found them and some other stuff. Then I had to lug it around in a downpour to get to Caitlin and Leo's for dinner and discuss the wedding coming up next year. Leo's a doctor and had a look at Cristin's bum toe and got her off on the right FOOT!
Thursday- I slammed at Urbana and Chad Anderson hosted cuz he has to host the next Urbana which is our SEMI-FINALS (which I'm in! Come cheer a nerd on!) I came in second to Paulie Lippman from Denver. Afterwards was an incredibly long and tedious "party" where me and Leticia split crappy tips after working our asses off for non-tippers! Ah, the service industry!
Friday- The rain finally let up! I picked up the Batman Begins DVD (which totally kicks ass!) A big rap show brought a really nice and generous crowd! Made up for the previous night!
Saturday- Finally! A two snoo's weekend! Took a nice long stroll with Cristin and really had a long talk about our relationship and how we feel about each other and our lives and it feels great to work out that emotional stuff with someone you've been with for 5 YEARS! I even came up with a hum-dinger of an idea for a book project! We played Scrabble and watched some of our fave flicks. (Almost Famous & 24 hour Party People). Also- a grocery store near us is going out of business and we went in and it was like the place had been looted! Apocolypse shopping! We got $120 worth of groceries for $80!
Sunday- More strolling and Scrabble. Cristin prepared for her college lecture in Nebraska. She leaves Thursday. I get to cat-sit while she's gone!
So come see me slam this Thursday at 7pm at the BPC! Our feature is the awesome Sonya Renee!!!

So much has happened and I couldn't get to my blogger page for much of last week! On Friday the 30th we had a huge hurricane benefit at the BPC which had a stellar line-up including Eric Bogosian, Amri Baraka, Anne Waldman and a bunch of Art Stars! All of the staff performed on the bar which was cool. The club has really forged an awesome community of support and family. Me so proud! Plus we raised over $3000! Cristin went to the opening of a new wing at the Mutter Museum in Philly and brought back some cool stuff from a silent auction. The next day was Dachtoberfest at Washington Square park! Thousands of wiener dogs! Amanda Nazario brought her corgi, Spike, and we got to hang out in the dog run and pet lots of friendly pooches! We had BBQ and then went to see Capote which is one of the best films of the year and should get Phiilip Seymour Hoffman an Oscar! It's really an amazing performance. After that we attended Leticia's 22nd b-day and Cristin cut a lot of hair and made $70 in tips! We also got to see some great music including Soce-The Elemental Wizard (who will soon be seen on a VH1 reality show),Plastic East (a great power pop trio featuring Glenn who used to work at the cafe) and the Howl (up and coming rock band featuring Andrew Katz and Brer Brian and Stefan Zeniuk and Lil' Avram all of whom are club regulars and staff). I finally got a karaoke machine and have started adding it to Nite Cap with Shap. Come sing with us Tuesdays at Midnight! Urbana continues to chug along. Only one open slam left this quarter! I'll be in the Semi-finals on October 20th! Speaking of slam, Mike Henry was in town this weekend and we had lunch with him on Saturday! The Slam Planet is nearly ready for public screening! We also went to see Sage Francis rock the house Saturday night. He's got an army of fans! It was pretty instense being amongst a crowd that knew the lyrics to every song! I felt like an old fart! Still, Sage has an awesome stage presence and really put on one of the best hip-hop shows I've ever seen. Cristin was also at a film conference all week long and made lots of new friends and contacts. I'm really proud of her! She is gearing up for a big trip to L.A. in a week and then we have made plans to go to the Hudson Valley for our 5 year anniversary! It's hard to believe how fast 2005 has gone by!
