SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Friday, July 29, 2005

Sorry to leave you hanging, gentle reader! Between cat-sitting, working and trying to stay cool in the oppressive heat we've recently had the blog has been on the back-burner. I'll try to get you up to speed!

-Cristin and I attended Kris Anton & Sara Valentine's lovely wedding on Staten Island. It was the first time either of us had taken the ferry. It was really cool you go right by Lady Liberty and we saw her all lit up on our way back. The wedding was at the Alice Austen house by the water. The Jollyship crew was there and the Hungry March Band played as well! Lots of good eats at the reception plus the weather was nice. Then we had a another invite to a wedding on Labor Day weekend!

-Recieved a package from Johnny Ryan (Angry Youth Comix) which included an awesome sketch along with Comic Book Holocaust (a limited run of 300). This guy is the funniest guy in comic book scene and I urge you to check out his awesomeness!

-I met the "other Shappy" last night. I was standing outside the BPC and this guy comes over and says "I'm the other Shappy! Whenever I google myself you take up the first 4 pages!" Turns out this guy has some kind of TV show called "Shappy and Dave" and they are doing some project for Pepsi Smash call 100 concerts in 100 days. Then I took out my broadsword and lopped off his head-THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!

-In the ultimate sadness department, Burt (the Washington Square dachshund) passed away earlier this week. He was a rescue dog and was very sweet and one of the few weens me and Cristin had the honor of knowing personally. It's hard to believe he's gone! The poor pup was only 3 years old! Our condolences to his mom & day Jenny and Mike.

- The National Poetry Slam is only 11 days away! Last night we had round 1 of the NYC regionals. The NY teams are going to provide some intense competition! Nuyorican won, Brooklyn took 2nd, Urbana took 3rd and Bar 13 took 4th. Everyone came with new work which was awesome. Lots of group pieces from all the teams! That's a first for Nuyo and Bar 13 but with the 3X5 slam format you only get 3 chances to showcase every poet! I hope to update during Nationals!

-Big ups to Beth Lisick (two snoos poetry pal) who could quite possibly be the first slammer to have a book on the NY Times best-seller list! Check out her book-Everybody In The Pool! It's a hoot and has been on the Entertainment Weekly MUST LIST!

Tonight is me and Cristin's 4 year-9 month anniversary! We plan on a nice dinner then it looks like I'll have to pop in the BPC to make sure things are going okay at the bar and then head to the Nuyorican for round 2 of the NYC regionals. Then an awesome weekend in Astoria!

We've been multi-cat-sitting for the past few days! I'm here now with Max and Angie (who we have to administer ear medicine-she hates it but isn't too fussy about it) then we go visit Jet Boy and Bala who we were told were pretty shy but seem to really like us when we visit so we hang with them for a while. Still, it's nice to be in the heart of everything and to be able to walk to work. Our pal Susan came to visit this weekend. The grudge slam happened on Thursday and Central Jersey and Boston Cantab beat Urbana on its home turf. We also found out that Urbana is slamming against Bar 13 and Central Jersey in the first round of Nationals! NY bloodbath! I can't wait to see that bout! Friday was a big dud of a night for me at the BPC but I still had fun hanging out after a slow night. Saturday I took my time packing and headed back to hang with Cristin and Susan. We had dinner and saw Charlie & The Chocolate Factory which was AWESOME! I wasn't sure what to expect but Burton did a great job sticking to the book's intent. It was dark and bizare but also very playful and funny. It's nice to see Burton flex his comedy muscles. Then I took Susan to an awesome trans-gender rock show at the BPC! It was like being in a room full of Hedwigs! We chatted up all the tranny rockers and had loads of fun! Sunday we saw Susan off and took a day to just relax twosnoos style. Ordered in dinner, played Scrabble and watched lots of cable TV with the kitties! I'm off to meet some of the BPC staff to see Wedding Crashers! I have a new tap being installed at the bar this week and a wedding to go to this weekend! Yikes! I'm a busy boy!

Had a nice weekend. On Saturday we went to Neptune where Cristin had dinner the night before. The waiter let me know that my lady had been there with another man! Cristin was embarrassed! It was cute! Sunday we went to the park to play Scrabble and were accosted by a crazy squirrel with half a beard on his face. We dubbed him "Crazy Sidebeard". He kept getting closer trying to get to our snacks! Curse you, Crazy Sidebeard! Monday me and Cristin did a lovely show called Serenade which was put together by our pal Ishle Yi Park. It was in an Italian restraunt and me and Cristin read love poems to each other. In fact that was what the whole show was about! People brought people to the show and surprised them with a love poem! Ishle arranged the whole show so she could shower her beau from New Zealand with sonnets and songs! Our pals Ed and Jeannie were there as well and we all went to the candy shop where Ed must have bought 3 dozen Pez dispensers! We went to this new cheesesteak joint and it was de-lish! Last night was pretty fun at the BPC and today I meet with Taylor to see how our slam team is shaping up and to learn his cat's needs as me and Cristin are going to cat-sit for him and our regular cat-sitting job at the same time this week! We also got another offer to cat-sit! Why can't we get any dachshund-sitting gigs? Our pal Susan is coming down for a visit and the Grudge Slam is this Thursday!

The Fourth was swell me and Cristin had a picnic in the park and played Scrabble. I won both games. The weather was perfect and it was fun to people watch. We watched Indiana Jones and had pizza for dinner. Tuesday I worked the Mannhattan Monologue Slam and got slammed behind the bar and made good tips. My gang of regulars came for the Nite Cap and we watched Willy Wonka and Pee-Wee in preparation for the re-make. There was a 35 year old nerd who had never seen Willy Wonka before! That blew my mind! The next 2 nights are going to be busy as well. Morgan Taylor is doing a kid's show on Saturday at the Living Room. I hope to make it! Fantastic Four is getting terrible reviews as I expected. I don't think I'll be rushing to see that. In fact, if you want to see a great super-hero flick go see Batman Begins!

Hollywood can't blame it's 18 week slump on two snoos! We just got back from War of the Worlds! I thought it was good and scary and had all the elements of good summer blockbuster. We couldn't believe it was only rated PG-13! It's extremely gory and nightmarish. The whole rating system is a joke anyway. So the Viewmasters of the Universe show went very well last night. My projector showed up in time! It worked great even if it wasn't exactly what I had expected. I was also worried that nobody was going to show because of the holiday weekend but if you project it-they will come! The Trachtenberg Slidehow Players were there despite being under the weather. Andy Friedman brought in a small crew and even backed up surprize guest poet Rives who just moved here a few weeks ago. Nick jones was unable to do what he had planned but brought some back-up slides and then we improv-ed some stuff while Matt Lydon and Stefan Zeniuk played guitar and sax behind our nonsense and people sorta just left. Cristin cut hair all night and made like $60 in tips! She's become quite the barber! I was able to pay everyone a fair amount and had a great time showing off my viewmaster collection. I hope to do another viewmaster show in the future and have it be less improvy. I'll need to train projectionists and stuff. So far this holiday weekend has shaped up pretty well! I took Friday off which was a smart move cuz no one was at the club last night. I had a fine meal with Cristin and then she came home and slept for 12 hours! I guess she was pretty tired! I watched the original KING KONG cuz I got all excited watching the trailer at of all places volkswagon.com!
I thought they were going to show it before WAR OF THE WORLDS but they didn't at our local theater! Go figure! So Happy Fourth o' July everybody! Me and Cristin plan on getting our mouths around some BBQ at the beer garden tomorrow!
