SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Thursday, June 30, 2005

It's been great being a Manhattan resident for the last week. I got a new pair of glasses and got to stroll around and visit some of my fave shops and eateries. We went to a new southern style joint called Mara's that actually serves biscuits and gravy (Impossible to find in NYC) and ate at Velselka a couple of times. Found some cheap DVD's at Entertainment Outlet and it's a cab fare saver to be able to walk home from work. The only downside is not getting the mail, so I'm praying that my Viewmaster projector has arrived in time for my Viemasters of the Universe show this Saturday (see Upcoming Shows page). Everyone is confirmed! Please come check out a rocking evening of slides and Viewmaster reels! No big plans for the fourth as of yet. Definitely going to see War of the Worlds and see the big fireworks show.

Well, I'm trying to get my blog to look normal again. Cline told me to delete all the dumb quizzes I posted because it was screwing up the alignment. Now that I've done that it's even stranger looking. I'm worthless in front of a computer! Thank God I don't have an office job! Saw LAND OF THE DEAD last night and Cristin and I agreed that it was a big build-up to nothing! It was all about the zombies becoming sentient and slowly attacking a tall building on an island ran by Dennis Hopper. You get all set up for a big battle between humans vs. zombies and it never arrives! Oh well, still some not-so-subtle jabs at current politics make this a great addition to Romero's ouvre! Lots of rain in the city today. I'll probally stay in and read my new Little Lulu book.

Well, it’s been another hectic week at the Shaptowicz household! Last weekend we went to visit Cristin’s folks in Tom’s River for Father’s Day. We got up early on Saturday and went out to the outlet mall where me, Cristin and Cristin’s mom all got new pairs of Vans! I love these shoes! So comfy and long-lasting! I also got a pair of skater shorts that look quite “rad” on me! Her brother, Kevin, got a new sailboat and we went out to greet them on “Sea-reen”. Bruce even let me drive a bit! Had a lot of seafood by the sea. I didn’t go overboard because shellfish are are big gouty no-no’s. It was a flurry of activity! Those Aptowicz weekends really wear you out! It was fun and always nice to get out of the city. Monday I went to the O’Debra Twins and did a song with Matt Lydon. We both had shows to promote. I got a ride home with my Astoria neighbor, Irene and had late night White Castle! I would say my favorite fast food joint! Tuesday was slow but I still made out okay. We watched Chappelle’s Show. Wednesday we flew out to Boston for a commercial shoot. The plane was delayed and we didn’t get to the hotel til midnite and we had a 5am wake call! Despite the early hour me and Cristin and Ernie Cline rocked the Fun and Games Arcade with our video game poems! The guys in charge really seemed to dig us! We got paid on the spot (nice!) and they gave us $100 for lunch! We went to Legal Seafood by the Boston Wharf. Then walked to Boston Commons and went and saw Batman Begins! (First time for Cristin, second time for me and Ernie) I was pretty groggy most of the day but we managed to catch an early flight home! We are supposed to be getting copies of our poetry videos soon! I’ll post ‘em when I get ‘em! In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for us on a Network that shows Cartoons! Friday I was back behind the bar for the big 3rd Party CD realease party. It was super busy but fun! I was supposed to host the Freestyle Pyramid but was slammed at the bar. Now we cat-sit in a nice central air apartment and eat out in the East Village!

Just got back from Gotham City. . .

Man! Batman Begins is one of the best superhero movies EVER! The casting is perfect! Christian Bale is brooding and intense, Micheal Caine is snarky and compassionate as Alfred, Gary Oldman is great as Lt. Gordon and rocks an awesome mustache. The script is sharp and the look of the film is simular to the first Burton Batman. It really moved me even though I have seen and read the Batman origin dozens of times. It works for the same reason Spider-Man and X-Men worked. Everyone involved took the material seriously and respectfully. It's one of the best flicks I've seen this year.

Heading out to the Jersey Shore this weekend to visit Cristin's family. I'm taking Friday off which allows me to hit the Big Apple Comic Con before Cristin's brother picks us up with his new sailboat in tow! Cristin's mom is taking us to the outlet mall which has a Vans store so I'm gonna get some new shoes. Should be an awesome weekend!

Also, Cristin's Uncle Jerry is in the hospital and she asked if I could ask you to put some positive vibes in the air for him. Thanks.

Got some sad news last week. My sister-in-law's father passed away last week. Services are today. My love goes out to Katie and all of her family and my brother and the kids. At least he isn't suffering anymore. He had been in hospice for almost 2-3 months.

In other news, it has been incredibly hot and humid here in NYC for the last 10 days or so. It rains from time to time but it doesn't cool off at all. At least it's a little cooler here in Queens but not by much. We have tried to cool down the apartment but I worry about our second-hand AC breaking down.

Monday was the O'Debby Awards and it was really cool. Everyone dressed up despite the heat and there was a red carpet and the O'Debs hand-made all of the statuettes! They must've handed out 30 awards! I won one! And was joined on stage by lots of folks for a musical acceptance speech. I also was able to confirm the Trachtenberg Family and Nick Jones (of Jollyship) for my View-Masters of the Universe show I have coming up on July 2nd. Yay!

Tuesday I worked the Manhattan Monologue Slam and made good tip$! Had fun talking to various actor types all of whom seemed to work behind the scenes on Broadway. I pitched a Phil Collins musical called "No Jacket Required". It could happen!

Wednesday I bought socks.

Thursday I worked and what was looking to be a slow night became busy when a group of theatre folks dropped by for an after-show party.

Friday got slammed at the bar early around 8:3o and it went all night. Bunch of really loud bands. My right foot was all swelled up by the end of the night. Still, I was in good spirits most of the night unlike the 4 hour open bar from last week that took the piss out of me.

Saturday me and Cristin finally got to spend some QT together. We took a nice stroll and bought some soaps and stuff at Bath & Body Works and I got the Dave Chappelle DVD at a good price. We had an awesome dinner at CUP a new-ish joint that serves giant cups of coffee and a de-lish banana cream pie. Came home and watched the Chappelle Show DVD and played some Scrabble. I won despite snoo's bingo!

Sunday we went to the MOCCA comic convention. This like a cool, self-published, underground press gathering. We met Ward Sutton of "Sutton Impact" and who did the title animation for Strangers with Candy. Cristin even gave him a hair consultation! He drew and awesome sketch of me in my King Nerd book that Hannah made me. We also spotted Frank Miller (SIN CITY) who always looks pissed off. Our pal Christine was there from Last Gasp. We also chatted up Jeffrey Brown (UNLIKELY, BIGHEAD) and went to the Dan CLowes (Ghost World) interview. It was a nice afternoon and it was nice to see so many folks supporting the small presses. It was packed! We came home and had our traditional Neptune Diner Sunday Dinner.

Today we found out we are going to Boston next week and I finally recieved my Star Trek Season 3 from eBay! They have Spock's Brain! Live long and prosper!

Another great night for me at the BPC. I'm sad for Mel Brooks loss of his wife Anne Bancroft. It sucks when the love of your life goes before you do. No controlling that, but it sucks none the less.

Another busy weekend-and it ain't over yet! Thursday Soft Skull came pouring into the BPC for a big Book Expo party. Publishers and distributors from all over the world were in town and all the hip ones came to our bar! I forgot how much these people like to PARTY! My Kapow! publisher Juliette Torrez was there and we had a great time chatting and toasting the porn folks that were there. After that was Beau Sia's birthday party and I had already made much TIP$ so I let Moonie take over. Then the next day we had a 4 hour open bar! Jeez louize! It was non-stop drinking! I was soooooo tired and worn out on Saturday but a richer man for it. The one thing that sucked was that I had to punk out of checking out the Book Expo and dinner with Bucky. Plus we had early brunch plans with our pal Susan Rice the next day. Aunt Susan took us to the Knickerbocker which was really nice and has that old-school New York feel. I had steak and eggs! Snoo had her first taste of poached eggs and creamed spinach. We then walked around the humid East Village for a while then retreated to the BPC for SHOOT THE POEM a video film fest that featured QUACKY as one of it's entries. It's a great little video and I got a copy that I hope to get up on the video page here at uncleshappy.com soon as I send it to webmaster Cline! I also got a little money for being in the thing which was a nice surprize! Hey, we already sold a book on half.com! Now I gotta get some stuff on eBay proper. Tonight is the O'Debby Awards in honor of the O'Debra Twin's 2nd anniversary at the club! I'm presenting an award! So Exciting!

Lest we come off as ingrates. . .
A BIG twosnoos THANK YOU goes out to-

Our pal David in Seattle-who sent us a big box full of McPhee goodness (skulls, gnomes, ninjas, disgusting recipe cards) and, most cherished, a set of dachshund bookends which are already in use! We owe you and Roscoe some swag!
It arrived the day of the NERD SLAM! Talk about kismet!

Mighty Mike McGee- Thanks for drinking all those Slurpees, McGee! I am now the proud owner of a complete set of SITH Slurpee cups and Cristin is the now the girlfriend of a guy who has a complete set of SITH Slurpee cups! Thanks for the SITH Pez as well! Ye shall be rewarded at NPS!

my Mom- for the Homer Simpson flip-flops and even more Star Wars Pez! My mommy raised a man-child!

Cline-How could you kill those younglings?

Me and Cristin had a very laid-back Memorial Day weekend. Had an awesome brunch at Fatty's Cafe on Saturday. Watched each of our favorite movies (me-Star Wars ANH, she-Showgirls) We went for some nice long strolls in the park. We even left Queens on Monday! We were all set to play Scrabble in Central Park but it started raining. We headed to our fave used bookstore Housing Works and played Scrabble there. We also found some great books and I got a copy of Grosse Point Blank which I hear is pretty good. We went to the small dog park in Washington Square and then went to Times Square for BBQ at a joint called Vivian's (I think) it was sooooooo effen good! Plus it was fleet week so we were surrounded by sailors! How patriotic! Me and Cristin are writing a bunch of video game poems for a big project coming up! I love how stuff like this falls into my lap! Beau Sia is having his big 29th b-day party at the club tomorrow night. The Book Expo America is in town this weekend and my pal from Austin, TX Wammo is in town as well! I also have a short film premiering at the BPC this Sunday at 4pm (check bowerypoetry.com 4 details!). I am finally starting to list some art books on half.com. I'm also gonna try to get some fun stuff listed on eBay soon. I gotta admit, 2005 is going pretty well thus far!
