SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Monday, February 28, 2005

Hey, I'm 36! Mom called to let me know I was born at 8:03 am! Thanks, Ma! Today I plan on moving some stuuf around to accomodate the new IKEA bookshelf Cristin has coming next weekend. Then I'm gonna go and shop around a little and then meet up with snoo for Olive Garden and Monty Python's Spamalot on Broadway! 2005 is already shaping into a great year for me! Happy that Sideways and Eternal Sunshine got screenplay Oscars and that The Incredibles won over Shlock 2 and Shlock Tale! The rest of it was bunk. Still, it was fun to hang with Jordan and Anne who have an awesome new pad here in Astoria. I got pics! All will be revealed later this week!

Golly! It's been 10 days since I updated! In those 10 days I had Bucky Sinister staying at our place and performing all over town. Thursday we had Buddy Wakefield do a short set for us before Urbana. He just won the Indie World Poetry Slam for the second time! Friday we had Uncle Jimmy at the club and my date from Junior Prom 1986 showed up and we caught up. Back then she was Michelle Bricker now she's Michelle West and has 3 kids! Crazy! Left work early on Friday to visit with Cristin's sister who just got back from the Grand Canyon. The plan was to go see THE GATES in Central Park but me and snoo were pooped and just stayed in and went to Neptune for dinner. The next day we did go to THE GATES and I gotta tell ya, it's pretty breath-taking. There's just so many of them and you look around and it's a different view every time. We took a bunch of pictures and I'll put them up when I get them developed. Then I went out to see Thornton who was in town for the Toy Fair but left before I got to snag his pass! Hannah and Jason from Quimby's were in town as well! So we went out for drinks but ended up stuck in a light blizzard! Monday Bucky took me and Cristin out for BBQ and I took him to Bar 13 which was crawling with out-of-town poets who are taping for the new Def Poetry season. I saw Anis and Geoff Trenchard and a very tipsy Alvin Lao. I suspect many of them will drop by Urbana tomorrow which would be awesome! Me and Bucky went to the O'Deb's Show & Tell and lucked out by getting in the top 10 of a crowded open-mic list. Bucky rocked it and I was glad his last performance was for a crowd that really dug his vibe. I did an improv song about THE GATES and got rave reviews! Tuesday we had a big release party for the ASS(Art Star Scene) comp CD that was a mind-blowing line-up of musical talent. The Tractenberg Family, Toby Goodshank (Moldy Peaches), Brief View of the Hudson, Taylor Mead, Celena Glenn, Andrew Katz (who bartended with me all night) Moonshine and Rev. Jen and Jeff Lewis and Soce The Elemental Wizard! Jeezus! What a line-up! And that's not even the whole list! I made great tip$ and have 2 more big shows this Thursday and Friday! Cristin gave me my Birthday present (IT's FEB 28 hint-hint) early which was tickets to see Monty Python's Spamalot on Broadway! Can you believe it?!? I'm so excited! I love my gal! We are going to watch the Oscars with Jordan Hoffman and his lady on Sunday. Jordan has given me a part to read in his new screenplay. I'll post more info about the reading when it gets closer. Looking forward to a relaxing weekend.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Snoo and I celebrated a day early cuz it seemed ridiculous to try and go out on Valentine's Day so today we took a nice long walk and saw SIDEWAYS which was pretty great and confirmed that Giamatti was indeed robbed of an Oscar nom! He shoulda got one for American Splendor as well! Stupid Acedemy. We then had dinner at Neptune and came home and watched an episode of Law & Order written by on of Cristin's old teachers at NYU, Charlie Rubin. It was the one with Chris Noth. Flipped over to the Grammys and saw nothing good. Cool that Green Day won something and Garden State got best compiled soundtrack. Bill Clinton won best Spoken-word! Also got to see the Revenge of the Sith trailer before SIDEWAYS-AWESOME! They gotta get this onr right. . .RIGHT?!?

There's a traffic jam in NYC caused by YAMS! A truckload of YAMS! It's just funny to see the words YAM SPILL on the news. I've been a busy boy this week! I typed up a bunch of poems for the upcoming BPC book coming out and I registered for jury duty! I also had a bunch of work related stuff going on this week. Cristin leaves tomorrow for Arkansas for a gig. I gotta work. Last night I got the best tip ever from Bill Livingston-A CYLON RAIDER model kit! Awesome, no? Next week I got a lot of out of towners coming in. I can't reccomend Bizarro World (DC comics HC $30) enough! It's got stories from my pal Maggie Estep and M. Doughty from Soul Coughing wrote a great story about Aquaman at an open-mic! Good luck to all the slammers at the Individual World Poetry Slam!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 2, 2005

AUSTIN – Local documentary filmmakers Kyle Fuller and Mike Henry, whose editing suite was heavily damaged in Monday’s fire at the Guadalupe Arts Center, have established a fund to help save their documentary film, Slam Planet: War of the Words, which they’ve been working on for the past year and a half. Proceeds from the fund will go toward massive data recovery efforts, beginning this week, to help salvage equipment and essential computer data heavily damaged in the two-alarm fire.

The movie, which follows the fortunes of Austin and New York poets as they prepare for and compete in last year’s National Poetry Slam competition, was slated for completion this April before Monday’s fire. The fire caused an estimated $500,000 damage to the arts complex, at 1705 Guadalupe, which serves as a home for numerous Austin arts groups and individual artists.

“It couldn’t have come at a worse time,” said Fuller, Co-Director / Producer for the film. “We had just moved out of another production office that weekend, so almost all of our gear and some of our footage was in the suite when the fire started.”

Though much of the computer equipment housing edited sections of the film suffered extreme heat and smoke damage, technicians are hopeful that data on the hard drives can be recovered.

Despite what Co-Director / Producer Henry’s euphemistically calling “a hurdle,” he’s still determined to see the movie through to completion.

“This is such an important story to tell,” Henry said. “If you’ve seen slam poetry, you know what an incredible art form it is. Nothing else out there today allows the kind of freedom of expression that slam does. Anyone can walk into a Poetry Slam, step up the mic, and, in the space of three minutes, share their stories with an energized audience.”

In interviews to be included in the film, Poetry Slam’s founding father, Marc Smith, characterizes the slam movement as more than just a great show. “Those of us who have been in it for a long time have seen the wonders that slam brings to people,” Smith explained. It’s a life journey we’ve been on.” Legendary TV and film producer Norman Lear goes on to say that slam will be “the next big social movement.”

Henry and Fuller, in addition to their work on Slam Planet, maintain an industry-leading website, slamchannel.com, containing information on slam, flash animations of performances, and downloadable files featuring the work of poetry slam artists.

Bank One has set up the Slam Planet Support Fund (Account Number 68462875, Routing Number 1110006); donors interested in helping Henry and Fuller can either visit a Bank One branch, mail checks to the Slamchannel offices at 1113 South Third Street, Austin, TX 78704, or contribute via PayPal at slamchannel.com (PayPal option available next week).

Additional benefit events are being planned; check slamchannel.com for updates.
