SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Saturday, January 29, 2005

Busy, busy! So far, the weather hasn't kept people from coming out to the BPC! (at least the nights I've worked) Tuesday was busy. Thursday we had a huge turn out for Urbana and then a show that lasted waaaaay to long. Friday was 3rd Party's big Friday blow-out. I have also met the new neighbors at Crime Scene which just opened a week ago. It's fun having a cop bar next door and the gals that work there are pretty cool. Cristin has a gig in Lancaster, PA this weekend which gives me a whole day to geek out. I've been reading comics and watching my Star Trek DVD's. I also got an invite to play RISK tommorrow. I'm also going to try and list some books to sell on eBay. Also, the Oscar nominations are mostly bullshit as usual. Giamatti was robbed AGAIN! Oh well, I'm happy Hawkeye got a nom. Man, January was a crazy month! And crazy in all the right ways. Me and Cristin think 2005 is going to be a good year for us. In my opinion, ever since I've met Cristin all of my years have been awesome!

So Sunday my pal Morgan Taylor called up and said "Let's go to the comic-con!". After I went out and got Cristin some Half & Half and eggs I made my way there toot-sweet! So of course few nerds braved the weather and many grumbling dealers were packing up early or making deals to cover their costs. I get there and when I get up the escalator there's Joyce DeWitt, Prisilla Barnes and Erin Moran wandering around and bitching about nobody being there to see them. Which makes me wonder why they are at a comic book convention in the first place. Don't get me wrong, it was awesome to see these seventies superstars, but what were they doing there? Of course this same convention has had Arnold Horshack and the woman from Saturday Night Fever so whatever. So here's my haul-

DVD's
Beatles Cartoons
Best of the Johnny Cash Variety Hour
Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
A promo film for Busch Beer with the Flintstones drinking and driving!

Books
Very Best of Marvel Comics
Big Book of DEATH
Plastic Man Archives Vol. 6 HC (half-price from a fat guy who belched in my face before I bought it)

7 for $5 paperbacks
Still Life w/Woodpecker
Empire Strikes Back (Marvel)
Green Laontern/Green Arrow #2 (Neal Adams)
Stardust D. Bowie Story
Greatest Monsters in the World
Groupies 2
and a short story collection called-UNICORNS!

cOMICS
Devil Dinosaur #4
Megaton Man 1-8 $8!
Falling in Love #137
Traci Lords Personality Comics
Metal Men #43
Fat Albert #1
Dynomutt #1
Uncle Scrooge Goes to Disneyland

I really hoped to find a Stephen Hawking Simpsons figure but no luck. Actually the toy selection was pretty lame. Mostly super hero stuff. One guy had a buncha stuff I wanted but it was super over-priced. Shouldn't dealers try to reward people who come out to these things instead of eBaying stuff? They annouced Johnny's death over the P.A. which was odd but sweet I guess. EXCELSIOR!

Go Eagles!!

Despite the age old Seasholtz love of the Eagles, do you want to guess which Seasholtz's brother was watching the Eagles game today, and which one was the Big Apple con?

More on the Apple Con later!

Just a quick note to say that me and Cristin are surviving the Blizzard of 2005! Cristin was gonna go to New Haven for her bro's b-day but Mr. Cold Meiser put the ka-bosh on that plan! It has been snowing all day and the heavy stuff hasn't even hit yet! I was gonna go to the comic con with Morgan tomorrow but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. It's fun being snowed in. It makes my movie collection make sense! Plus we stocked up on soup and stuff and the Chinese place is open downstairs. So we're all set! I feel bad for my fellow employees at the BPC. Hopefully they'll get to close up early. I'll be watching Dawn of the Dead.

Greetings from the Ice Burg! Wowza! It's cold and it looks like I'm getting a cold as well. Extreme temps usually trigger it for me. That didn't stop me from making a BBQ chicken dinner. I also organized some DVD's in an old timey cabinet thingy we found on the street. In doing so I seem to have misplaced one of the season 5 Simpsons discs and I'm of course freaking out because I can't find it! Moonie brought a bunch of folks for Nite Cap last night only to find a jazz band jazzing off til 1:30! I guess it's not such a big deal now but down the line I'm gonna want to start at Midnight as scheduled. Cristin downloaded all the pix we took last weekend so we'll put them up here soon! Wammo's in town this weekend and it looks like me and Morgan might go to the comic book convention this Sunday. Keep warm, fools!

Well, it was a really great weekend in Delaware, OH! We got in late on Friday and had some Chinese food and got to meet my new niece Taylor! Luke came down for a late night cameo then we all turned in to get an early start the next day. We went to Big Boy's for the awesome breakfast bar. I had biscuits and gravy for the first time in years and Cristin got a whole pot of coffee for herself! Luke and I bonded across the booth. We then went to a huge mall and freaked out over the size of it all. It was jammed with young married couples and their kids! My brother got into fights with two snooty ladies! I got a Revenge of the Sith t-shirt and a cool Hallmark Star Wars ornament super-cheap. We also went to some gadget shop and got Chris and Katie a spice rack and we got a slicer/dicer for ourselves. We went to the Goodwill after dropping the kids off and scored some fun clothes and stuff. Chris got a shelf for his garage. Man, I forgot to mention my bro and his wife just moved into a huge new house that is literally on the tee-off for the 4th hole of a private golf course! It's so big and new that me and Cristin were just in awe of the joint the whole time! It just made Cristin want to get a house even more! We cooked dinner Saturday night (pork tenderloin, mashed taters and green bean casserole!) and played 90's Trivial Pursuit. My lil' nephew is quite a bundle of cupcakes and sunshine! We hit it off pretty well and he liked the Rockem Sockem Robots I got em and the Simpsons nesting dolls were a big hit as well. He has the full run of the basement and he literally runs around in circles down there. Me and brother counted 8 laps! The next day we made queso and little weenies and watched the Eagles win (kinda-me and COA sorta dozed off with the kids). We then had dinner at Damon's which was a family feedbag! Overall I'm glad that Cristin finally met the rest of my family and had a great time of it to boot! She got a real thrill being called Aunt Cristin! We already miss the little stinkers! And the kids!

So the screenwriter dinner was pretty cool. It was a roundtable of bitching about the industry! So cool to be an "insider". Cristin's pumpkin chili was a hit! The house was amazing and huge! Monday Robbie and Joel got back in town and I took 'em to Barf 13 for the poetry slum then on to the O'Deb's Show and Tell. Worked on Tuesday but didn't get to do Nite Cap cuz the bands played til 2 am! Oh well. No skin off my nose.Wednesday me and Cristin performed at a tsunami benefit at the Asian American Writer's space and helped raise over $5000! Wow! It's nice to feel like you make a difference. Plus it was cool to see all of our poetry pals. Urbana was awesome again this week! Rob and Joel really pulled out all the stops and put on a great show. The slam was good too. Then we had a CD release party for Jollyship the Whizbang which had Corn Mo and the Wau Wau Sisters on trapeze! Now we pack up and head out to visit my brother and meet my new niece, Taylor! Should be a nice relaxing weekend unless the Eagles lose and ruin everything!

Hey, did I mention that Thax Douglas just popped into the club last Thursday? He was in town to open for Wilco on New Year's Eve! He says to me, "I read your on-line diary. I'm glad you're so happy all the time!" I guess Thax is right. I do tend to accentuate the positive here on the web page. But for the most part, I do have a pretty happy life here in New York. We had one of the biggest Urbana's of the year this past Thursday. I guess slam is riding a wave of popularity again. There was this wacky chick who hitchhiked from California to try to get on Def Poetry. I think people must think that the show is filmed live at some poetry venue in NYC that doesn't actually exsist. I'm not sure what people expect to have happen to them after they appear on a poetry show on pay cable. I got a check and something to put on the resume and that's about it. No movie deals. No Broadway shows. I still have to serve Pabst Blue Ribbon to cheap M-Fers for a living. Our feature, Shanny Jean Manney, was real good and funny. Then Joel Chamarra and Robbie Q are with us this week. Today me and Cristin are going to have dinner with a group of screenwriters! I'll tell you how it goes later!

SHAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Well, it's hard to believe we are half-way through a decade already! The last week of 2004 was a busy one. Monday I had some errands to run around Astoria and sent out a package of goodies to my folks in FL. Cristin and I watched an amazing documentary called OVERNIGHT about this asshole guy whos gets a deal with Miramax to make his crappy Pulp Fiction rip-off BOONDOCK SAINTS and totally blows it. Tuesday was a sloooow night at the club but I went DVD crazy with my Christmas bonus before work and had a nice selection of things to watch for Nite Cap With Shap. We chose The Warriors which was totally awesome! I also got BOONDOCK SAINTS just to listen to the commentary. Wednesday we had to pack up and get over to our cat sitting gig. I went to Old Navy and got a new winter coat with the gift card I got from my folks then we dined at Velselka and it was quite de-lish! Thursday was the night of Cristin's big retirement roast and toast from Urbana. After much e-mailing and organizing everything pretty much off as well as I'd hope. Lots of Cristin's pals showed up. Her brother and sister read a poem together. Emily, an editor at BUST magazine read "Hard Bargain", Taylor Mali, Reid H. Cooper, Mattue Roth, Post Midnight, Marty Mc Connell, Ed Garcia, Roger Bonair Agard, F. Omar Telan, Amanda Nazario, the Acentos Crew (did a group piece in Spanish!), Karen Benelli, Felice Belle and Bob Holman all read and said nice things about our guest of honor. But more importantly we raised quite a bit of money to give to tsnunami relief! Cristin also recieved a lot of nice gifts and we brought a guest book for all to sign. We recorded everything for properity so we might have a DVD to send to those who couldn't make it. New Year's Eve was one of the best we've ever had at the club! It was Taylor Mead's 80th b-day and all of the staff got up and put on a variety show. We went all night long and I made quite a bit of much-needed payola! I went back the next day for the all day New Year's Day poetry ready to give Seren a break but she was content to stay behind the bar so me and Cristin cut out of there and went home to play Scrabble and order in food. Today we saw Life Aquatic which we loved and we went out and bought even more cheap videos at Entertainment Outlet. Back to Astoria tommorow! Hope everyone had a nice New Year weekend!
