SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Wednesday, May 26, 2004

Well Ernie, you were right as always! Letting people comment on the old diary page was a BIG MISTAKE! I thought it might be nice if I could hear from folks that I haven't heard from since I started blogging. Instead, I get some asshole making lewd comments on a daily basis. Hey, if you hate me so much why read my stupid diary every day? You suck! Thanks for being such an asshole! I could care less actually, in a few days me and Cristin will be having a swell time in Austin. I also had a great time featuring for the O'Deb's last night at the club. Mondays are the bestest! Also I met a poet who's going to be in Spiderman 2! Lucky ducky!

Two nights of back breaking bartending! I seem to have lost my Friday night co-bartender Melissa. I should've figured that out a while ago when she was not returning any of the other bartenders calls for covering shifts. I called her 3 times tonight and got no response. Of course the problem of trying to schedule the bar at a poetry club is that pretty much everyone who works there is a fucking POET! This means everyone has gigs (including me) that they need to take off. I have no one for Sunday afternoon which means I might have to go in which means I have to be at the club Sun-Thurs. Drag. At least I'll be performing on Monday night as the feature for the O'Deborah Twins on Monday night at 10pm which got a mention in TimeOut NY magazine! My good pal Nora from Chicago came in Thursday with another Chicago gal Amy who used to come in to Estelle's back in the day. Nora and Amy used to work at the Blue Note in Chicago which was the second home to Mental Grafitti (Mad Bar) slam etc. At least I got to bartend for Guy's Louder Than Words poetry/talk show tonight with my snoo as a co-host. I had a mic but couldn't get a word in edgewise with RAC and Keith Roach and Eric Guereire blabbing about slam. (By the way J. Bradley I am hard pressed trying to remember how I mentioned you. I remember something about Big Poppa E being mentioned) So, I made good tips and survived another 14 hour day. I don't know how I'm ever going to wake up in time for the big hot dog eating contest tomorrow!

Things are going great! I can't tell you what's happening exactly but good things are on the horizon for two Snoos! Got to see some great stuff at the club the last 2 nights. First of all it was awesome to see Cass King and her hubby's band The Wet Spots a very naughty and hilarious musical burlesque act. The CD is a hoot! Then last night I saw God's Pottery which is a spoof christian folk duet! Made good tips and saw a lot of folk singers! Today, I make my special veggie soup!

Ah, finally the weekend! Had a little problem at the club with a bunch of Long Island punk rockers doing whip-it's in the basement! Still, made okay tips. Got home as the sun was coming up. Me and Cristin took a nice long walk and wanted to go to Just Arthur's restraunt but it was closed for rewnovations! Boo! Still, we had a fine meal at the Neptune diner. Now we play Scrabble and watch the Olsen twins host SNL!

Okay, I hope the comment thing is working. Blogger just revamped everything and it's kinda confusing. Had a swell night at work. Slow but still made okay tips. I like those nights. Now I'm back in Astoria and watching Futureworld. I need to go get a copy of Revenge of the Nerds for a project I'm working on. NERDS!

Let the good times roll!

Hopefully, you will see a POST COMMENT at the bottom of this page! This is awesome as I love feedback! Had a fine weekend. Cristin got back from her college gig and brought AARon Myers back with her. We all went out for BBQ and saw the Trachtenberg Family Players which was really fun and cute. Sunday we had tix for Avenue Q but didn't get to use them cuz Cristin had to be at the team meeting. BOO! I ended up taking Mike Henry to see Morgan Taylor cover the first Cars album then went and hung out with the gang at the BPC. Today I think I finally caught up on all my missed sleep. Back to Astoria tomorrow!

Your 2004 Urbana slam team!
George Mckibbens
RAC Mckibbens
Celena Glenn (for the fifth year in a row!)
and Anis Morgani
(alternate-Taylor Mali)

What an exhausting week! Tuesday night ending up being a loooong night of college kids doing bad sketch comedy til 4 am. Wednesday night I went to Celena's big fake militia party and Pac-Man competition. Mike Henry and his crew were there to film the finals the next night. Everyone was there and talking endlessly about slam bullshit with president Mali. Then the finals were the next night. Cristin got all dolled up and looked fabulous! The judges were all invited "celebrity" judges. We had Bust magazine, sex shop gals from Toys in Babeland, Soft Skull press, a comedy troop called Mustache McFadden and a couple of Urbana regulars who have never judged before. The judging was consistent and for the most part fair. I had a great time just being the bartender and raking in all the tips. It kinda sucked not being able to read but that's the way it goes I guess. I certainly had no burning desire to be on the team this year. I'd love to compete in Austin in two years! After Urbana we had a nice little showcase where I got to see the genius of one Jeff Lewis. A true goof rock impersario and a heck of a cartoonist to boot! I bought all of his comix! I started reading his "Jeff goes to Austin" book and can relate to his whole tale! Now I gotta go buy his record! Last night we had another cool show of swing/tin pan alley/banjo music and a guy I would have to call a soundlandscaper-Sxip. He beat-boxes while playing flute and harmonica through a loop station. It was amazing! Mike Henry was there to see it all. Ironically, Sxip played the last night Electric Lounge (Mikey's old club in Austin) was open! Jordan Hoffman (genius behind ULTRACHRIST) dropped by and so did Rob Neill who just re-launched Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind(60 plays in 30 minutes) in Brooklyn in an old bathhouse! Again another late night. And now we are cat-sitting again! Cristin is not yet back from a college gig she had yesterday and my baby bro, his wife and nephew Luke are all whooping it up Florida style with John and Brenda! Happy Mother's Day, Brenda Jo!

Well, I didn't make it to finals! I was up against some stiff competition and lordy, the crowd was having none of the Shappy brand of funny poetics. I felt I gave some stirring performances of "I am that Nerd" and "When the Soldiers Came" but they fell flat against the likes of Celena Glenn, Dawn Saylor, Taylor Mali and Chad who went on to finals. Still, it's kind of a relief to know that my summer is free for other pursuits. Snoo and I got an offer to perform in Las Vegas and if we can get it all worked out with the airlines we will do it. Friday was a bleh night at the club. Saturday I finally got a chance to watch some of the movies that have been lying around the house. Sunday we went to our fave diner and read the papers and headed over to Ed and Jeanie's for sushi and stuff.

And look who's this month's Def Poet!

Cristin will be a Def Poet as well!
