SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:
Wednesday, March 31, 2004 So it's cruddy weather here in NYC. Some spring! Tonight me and snoo are going to a party for Neighbor-Hoodies which are custom hoodies that usually have your neighborhood on them. Cristin's says "NERD THUG" which is what she calls her nerd posse. Hopefully I'll get an "ASTORIA" hoodie! But it's free food and drinks! Yippie! I should be going to Astoria now to get our mail but the idea of taking the train for an hour just to get mail and stuff isn't very appealling to me right now. We're doing employee reviews all this week. They are only lasting about 10 minutes. Oh yeah, me and Morgan Taylor are going to the Big Apple Con this Saturday! Horshack and Chewbacca are gonna be there! It's cool cuz me and Morgan went to our first con when I turned 13! A Nerd Mitzva! posted by Shappy at 2:32 PM Monday, March 29, 2004 So we're housesitting in Manhattan til next Tuesday! I'll be able to walk to and from work all week! Plus we can do stuff in the city all week as well! Yay! Tonight the Trachtenberg Family Players are at the club! Friday was pretty lackluster tips-wise. Saturday we had to get ready for our week long of housesitting and Sunday we watched Britney Spears career go down in the great Onyx Hotel Fire! posted by Shappy at 1:32 PM Friday, March 26, 2004 Man, my last post got responses from both my mom and Cristin's mom! Moms rule! That last entry was basically in response to all my friends who can't believe that one can lead a happy life in NYC without constantly persuing "fame & fortune"! I suppose I shouldn't continue this line of thought for the sake of pissing off anyone not so happy in the city they are living in, but you must realize that I always had metropolitan dreams as early as my first year of high school when me and my circle of friends passed around "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol" and went to Woody Allen movies and competed in high school speech tournaments reading Kurt Vonneget and Gregory Corso in our "prose & poetry" rounds! Even then, in Dayton, Ohio, big city life seemed inevitable. Like we'd all live in NYC someday... I detoured to Chicago for 10 years and I must admit, I was there a little longer than I should've been, but I don't want to 'should' all over myself. I can't really explain how cool it is to finally feel like a "real grown-up" -- with an established writing career and good job in the arts and savings -- after all these years. In Chicago, it was always touch and go with no real sense of reaching the golden carrot. These days, I feel as if I have really done something with my life experience and made it count. I am surrounded with great friends and make more friends every day. And, of course, when you leave everything behind to be with someone you love, you can never lose! (I am referring to a snoo) posted by Shappy at 4:31 AM Tuesday, March 23, 2004 I assure you, I am doing well! Lately I've noticed that when people ask what I'm up to these days and I tell them "Well, I really enjoy managing and tending bar at the Bowery Poetry Club, and living with my gal and performing the occasional college gig." People look at me as if to say "But. . .there must be MORE?" Yes, I have a few projects up my sleeve. I just don't want to jinx em by blabbering about them. Cristin says that in NYC it's always about "what's next?" Like when Beau Sia got the Broadway show, people were like- "What's next?" and Beau was all like "I don't know, I'll be concentrating on BEING ON BROADWAY!" So sorry if my domestic bliss isn't exciting for you, but fo me, it's exactly where I want to be right now. posted by Shappy at 1:14 AM Sunday, March 21, 2004 Friday was kinda slow, then kinda annoying. Still I made pretty good money. I also got my check from my NMU gig! I also picked home the Flintstones first season on DVD so I came home and watched some episodes. Saturday I slept in as much as a snoo would let me. Then we walked to Micheal's a restaurant we usually like but we both came home with bad tummy-aches! Cristin fell asleep while I watched the original Dawn of the Dead. I think it's hilarious that the remake knocked Jesus of the top of the list! Go zombies! Today snoo cut my hair and then we went for a walk then she kicked my ass in Scrabble with a 574 point game! I wasn't trying very hard. She got 4 bingos! posted by Shappy at 9:26 PM Friday, March 19, 2004 Well, another limerick slam has come and gone! And yet again I am baffled as to how I can go undefeated round after round and lose to someone who was so close to losing! I blame Taylor's cock-a-mamie (read-drunk) way of handling the "final round" if we had just let things run it's course I'm pretty sure I could have won. Instead we have this king of the hill thing at the end when me, Eric Guerri and Ed Garcia had to read our bottom of the barrel limericks. Eh, who cares. It's cool that Eric won a sparkly green hat. Billy Collins put on an amazing set! Who knew he was so funny? Plus, he read lots of dog poems which earned him a place in two snoo's hearts! After that, we had a huge hip-hop show. Thank God Moonie was there to help! Now I gotta do it all over again tonight! It has been snowing here in NYC. I think it followed me from Michigan. In other news, I'm growing a mustache! Oh, thanks for the boots Dad! They fit great! posted by Shappy at 1:49 PM Tuesday, March 16, 2004 Had a swell time in Marquette! When me and Roop arrived we were informed that Gayle would not be there! She missed her flight. So we hunkered down and gave the full house of poetry fans a pretty good show. I sold some books which is always nice. We had to spend an extra day in town but considering the money they were giving us, it was all good. I got to visit with my old pals Andrea and Stacy from Chicago. Andrea has a boy named Max who decided to call me "Man"! I also got to see the sites and sounds of the snowiest town in all of America! Aparrently they get 300 feet of snow every year! Yikes! I hope I get more college gigs! I love em! posted by Shappy at 12:48 AM Wednesday, March 10, 2004 Getting ready for my gig at Northern Michigan University in Marquette! I'm reading with Gayle Danley and Daniel Roop. When I tell other poets this, it blows thier minds! What a weird line-up! I think it's awesome to have such a diverse group. It shows how diverse the slam can be. I have to stay an extra day which is cool cuz I'll get to see my old pal Andrea and her son Max! I hope they have some cool shops and eateries. In other news, I'm losing weight! I'm now at 205! Just a month ago I was 213! Wha Happened? I guess I'm eating a little healthier these days. There's a new fallfel joint that I'm really into. I'm pretty much avoiding red meat all together. Chicken, fish and veggies-the Shapkins Diet! I found some more volumes of the Charlie Brown cyclopedia at the thrift store! Just a few more and I'll have a complete set to give to Luke when he's a little reader! I'm looking forward to my flights, I just can't seem to get any reading done unless I'm in transit! posted by Shappy at 4:43 PM Monday, March 08, 2004 Whatta weekend! Got totally slammed at the bar on Friday which is great cuz it was super slow on Tuesday and Thursday. I made enough money to buy 2 new pairs of New Balance sneakers which feel great on me barking dogs. I guess my gout flared up a bit cuz I was pretty sore Saturday and Sunday. I feel much better now that I've taken some pills. We got to cat-sit in the nice apartment and watch cable all day. We watched Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and snoo watched Whale Rider and cried a lot. We were gonna have dinner with the McKibben's but things got all screwy at the last minute plus we were lugging around a lot of luggage so we just went back to Astoria and ate at the Neptune. Snoo ate a plate of char-broiled octopus. She commented that it looked like something someone would eat in a sci-fi film and I agreed. We came home and actually watched Gigli (Cristin bought on sale at Blockbuster) it was as sucky as I thought it would be but was also like a car wreck you couldn't stop looking at how horrible it is. You can't believe how many times the F-word is uttered! Lazy screenwriting! I'm gonna start some spring cleaning tomorrow and catch up on some serious comic reading! Make mine Marvel! posted by Shappy at 1:49 AM Thursday, March 04, 2004 Call me SOUP-er MAN! Man, oh, man, I rocked out with some delish veggie soup today! I got a couple o' cans of veggie broth and some frozen snow peas, baby corns, carrots and regular peas, some red and green peppers and cilantro. I spiced it up and got some fresh baked bread from the local bakery. Snoo and I ate it all! So good and healthy to boot! I also got a book in the mail that I have been waiting for- It's Kids say the Darndest Things with a foreward by Walt Disney and illustrated by Charles Schulz! We also watched Reality Bites which is one of the first movies that has made me wax nostalgic about the 90's! Weird! posted by Shappy at 2:03 AM Tuesday, March 02, 2004 The party/show was a big success! Here's who showed up and performed-John S Hall, PostMidnight, Glenn from Plastic East, Brook Pridemore, Emily, Joel and Hannah (who sang "Hallejiah" that song from Shrek) Moonshine and Matt plated some songs and I did some improv songs. We had lots of good food. Sasha brought fresh homemade bread! Cristin called me around 5am and told me to come home! Yikes! Saylor Mali got me an awesome caveman puppet that I used to annoy everybody! The McKibbens clan got me a cool Doctor Honeydew doll! And Moonie got me the Peanuts paperback by Chip Kidd that had 32 extra pages of cool stuff! Awesome! Pretty much re-cooped and re-grouped today. Sam Henderson's new Magic Whistle annual comes out Wednesday! I can't wait! posted by Shappy at 12:17 AM
