SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Thursday, July 31, 2003

Please disregard that last post! I'm just dandy. The last 2 nights at the club have been supershort. I got home at midnight tonight! With creamed spinach and cornbread for a snoo! Mrs. Aptowicz, if you are reading this could you e-mail me or Cristin your recipe for cucumber soup? Somehow I ended up with a giant cucumber last night! I think one of the club's neighbors gave it to us. I think I'm gonna have my book ready by tommorow! Cristin's book is looking good as well! I love how everyone has new shit at Nationals! I'm really looking forward to hanging out in Chicago next week! Have I mentioned that enough?

Everyone is yelling at me! I plan to have a great time in Chicago no matter what! I'm sick of NYC and all of it's trappings. Are you there,God, it's me, Shappy.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while but one has to live a life in order to reflect upon it! Here's a blow by blow-

Wednesday-Day 5 of not working. Went out to roam around NYC dropped by Entertainment Outlet and got a bunch of movies. (turns out I'll need them in October, but more on that later) Met Cristin for dinner at Chat 'n' Chew came home and watched "Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle" which actually featured a wiener dog as JJL read a poem! Some kind of omen! Also, Cristin and I were invited to open for Eric Bogosian on Monday night at the BPC.

Thursday-Urbana hosted the first of 3 NYC slam regionals. As always, we asked that the teams perform brand new work and, as always, Nuyorican completely ignored that rule with the exception of Julian Curry, I'm pretty sure the rest of the team did old shit. Mainly because it was polished and memorized.
So of course they won. After that was a poorly attended staged reading of a play by John Farris which was actually pretty good. After that me and Dawn and Luckydave all sat around and shot the shit til way too late.

Friday- Slept late and went straight into work. Cristin drops by the club to let me know she got a great gig that will take her to another country for a whole month! I won't tell you any more! If you want more info, then tell Cristin she needs to update her as-of-yet unfinished website!! Urbana took second at regional #2 at Nuyorican. I had a super busy night at the club! Hip-hop madness! Must've been over 200 people there, most of them drinking! We ran out of several bottled beers. No one would buy draft beer! Made great tips and because Nuyorican runs so late me and Cristin got to leave together and have breakfast at the Neptune!

Saturday- Cristin and I both got to sleep in (together for a nice change) She zipped off to Ed Garcia's place to put a new chap-book together for Nationals. It's gonna be called Working Class Represent! She might even do another one with the rest of her porn poems called "Return the Valley of the Hot Teen Sluts"! I went to the Big Apple Comic Con. Scored some very nice complete sets of Viewmaster reels including Superman the Movie and GI JOE (featuring the old dolls in action poses!) and Planet of the Apes. Also got some fun comics for a $1 each and a video of the lost audition tapes for Star Wars (imagine Star Wars with Kurt Russell as Han, Cindy Williams as Leia and William Katt (Greatest American Hero) as Luke! It could've happened!) I then went to Ishle Park's show at the club and got to read a poem which was fun. I impressed our new door guy, Kirby Martin (who graduated from the same high school as me and my bro). We then split to have sushi under the stars with Beau (who left for Scotland to do Def Jam today)And then to cap off a swell day we watched the best of Will Farrell on SNL! Oh yeah, we also scored a bootleg of T3!

Which brings us to today! Cristin is rehearsing with the team and I'm grocery shopping and cleaning house while watching nerdy videos that snoo would never sit through. I have to write a bio for my chap book and read some of my new/old comics today. Tommorow we open for Bogsian around 7 and then head over to Bar13 for the last of the regionals. Then I leave for Chicago in 6 days!

Spent most of yesterday going through the Shappy Archives trying to find this picture of me protesting the first Gulf War for the new chap book. Instead, I found old report cards, flyers for shows I did in Chicago, a bunch of other pictures and various zines and mini-comics. I am such a pack rat! Still, it's nice to look at all the old mementos of performances past. It all seems like yesterday. Funny how fast a year goes by but when you look at an old flyer for a show you did 3 years ago it seems like ancient history! Cristin and I are trying to squeeze in as much "snoo time" as possible before the NPS. Last night was "Sweet & Lowdown", Scrabble and a can o' corn! Who knows what excitement awaits us tonight! Got the package today, Ma! Thanks for all the shirts!

Coney Island is awesome! It was pretty much everything I expected, cheesy, expensive, sleazy and dirty! Got there and immediately had a corn dog. Wandered around. Met up with Lucky and Simone and Jeannie. More folx were suppossed ta show but punked out. We saw the freak show, which was so-so, the bug-eater was the best. Rode the Cyclone which was outta control. It was like the cars were gonna fly off the track! Then we had pizza at Tottonno's which had the to be the finest pie I have ever had in New York! Words can not do justice to this pizza! The suckiest thing is that Coney Island is like 2 hours on a subway. Blech! I now have three days off! I have no idea what to do with them! I'll get some stuff for Nationals and try and get the book ready for press but mainly I guess I'll try and get some NYC stuff in like a museum or something. Next week I work Tuesday-Friday every night then leave Sunday for Chicago. Me and Cristin are gonna have a big date that Saturday

Thank heavens my lil snoo is in Philly this weekend cuz I had a "visitor" in the category of GIANT FUCKING BUG! It must have been a water bug cuz of the rain and the storm drain is behind the wall of our living room. I chased him back into a small crack near a pipe on the floor. I'm still all creeped out! I was gonna go to a rehearsal for a play in the club but it turned out to be the same weekend as Cristin's bro's wedding, so that's out. I just decided to stay in tonight and watch movies and work on the chap book and stuff. I sure miss snoo. I'm gonna go to Coney Island tomorrow with the BPC crew tomorrow. Should be fun! I can't believe I've never been! Gotta take in more of the Big apple from time to time.

I'm afraid my lil' snoo was in a sad mood all day today. It sucks being a genius with a day job. I'm just a slob with a bar job! I got all my wifely duties done today. Picked up the laundry, picked up a prescription, got my package at the post office. Turns out it was The Last Temptation of Christ DVD I ordered. It's such a good film! The soundtrack is the best. I watched Dancer in the Dark today as well-SUPER DEPRESSING! I used to listen to the soundtrack at Quimby's all the time. I should've left it at that! No wonder Bjork doesn't want to do movies anymore! I also got some drawings done for the book today. It took a while but I got back into the drawing groove. Cristin read my Tarot cards tonight as well, things are looking good for me! I can't wait for the whole slam in Chicago trip!

WOW! The last 2 days have been super fun! Monday's slam at Bar 13 was a gas and a giggle. Taylor and I decided to do a duet of When the Soldiers came to my Village and completely offended a whole pride of old lady poetry types. Nobody "gets" that poem! I guess that's why I dig performing it so much. We came in last (like it mattered) I think everyone on our little squad (me, Taylor, Dawn and RAC), had fun slamming for the first time in a long time. I then went out for foodstuff with the kiddles and then foolishly went to the club and hung out WAY too late. Got to read again though and got a nice response. Tonight was Poetry+Karaoke=FUN! which is always a joy. I sang Come Fly With Me and got offered a gig at Joe's Pub and was asked to submit poems to Open City! Huzzah! I then closed the show with Crying by Roy Orbison and hit all the high notes and brought the house down! Made great tips and had a very tasty taco salad! Looking forward to a day off tommorow and picking up a package from the post office tomorrow. I hope it's the bowling pin lamp mom and dad bought for Cristin and me as a housewarming present!

Watched Beast from 20,000 Fathoms yesterday. It is the grandaddy of all atomic monster flicks. It paved the way for Godzilla and was Harryhausen's first movie monster. It's so cool watching monsters tear up New York now that I live in New York! It's like "Hey! That's 2 blocks from where I used to work!" Tonight I slam at Bar 13 for the heck of it. I'm part of the "Could've been Urbana" team featuring me, Dawn Saylor, Taylor Mali and RAC. It's like the fantasy slam league I wanted to start a couple of years ago with the Austin slam nerds! Going to meet Cristin for dinner and then slam myself silly! I have to start drawing stuff for the new chap-book. Perhaps I'll bring the old sketchbook with me.

This was probally the worst week I have ever had at the club both stress-wise and money wise. However, I did get to talk up a project with a Comedy Central guy. They taped a show at the club on Thursday. Friday was just dismal. Saturday was a whole new day! Cristin and I did some long overdue cleaning. We even went out and bought one of those new-fangled spray mops. What a joy to use! We watched Ice Storm, went out for sushi watched 6 degrees of Separation and Freddy's dead and played Scrabble. Cristin actually scored 506 points! Yikes! Yes, I loves the domestic life!

Had a pretty easy night at the club. Got a bit ill from eating Taco Bell. I know I shouldn't eat that shit anyway. Lesson learned, I guess. Um, portions of this diary were edited by Cristin after the fact because she's secretively like that, because she's crazy like that. But Cristin said she's going to make it up to me by buying me a bottle of Flintstone's Vitamins the size of my head. Also, I just want to wish a grand bon voyage to Snoo's and mine favorite wonder twin couple: Ernie and Susan!! They are finally taking their Alaskan honeymoon! Have fun, and send postcards!

We had an air conditioner in our closet for some time and today was the breaking point for me, humidity-wise, so I took my chances and put it in the window, bought an extension cord and Sweet Hallejah! AIR CONDITIONING! It's just in the bedroom which is fine by me! That was the big accomplishment today. Also, Cristin cut my hair and I cleaned the bathroom. I have also discovered the joy of Hot Pockets! Why didn't anyone tell me how awesome those things are? With rent and airline tickets July is going to be a tight month for me. I certainly have enough movies to last the rest of the month and then some. I need some new shorts and shoes. Other than that my expenses are pretty low, mostly cuz I work a lot. Morgan Taylor's Rock Group is playing it's last ever gig at the Living Room this Saturday, I might check that out. Also ran into Kirby Martin a couple days ago (Can you believe that CAL?!?MOM?!?) perhaps we'll go to the show together!

Looking good, feeling good! Just finished re-editing and typing up all the poems for my new chap-book! I love that sense of accomplishment! Now I gotta start drawing some cartoons for it. Also got my plane tickets for Chicago. Looks like I'll be there early Sunday (the 3rd) so I can possibly do Green Mill that night! I'm for sure booked at Funky Buddah that Monday night the 4th with Lucy Anderton. Should be groovy! It's a beautiful day and I can hear the Urbana team plotting and scheming in the next room. It's like poetry day or some such shit! If you think about it, almost every day is poetry day for me!

OOOOOH! AAAAAH! What a view of the fireworks me and Cristin had last night! We are on the 28th floor in a groovy air-conditioned apartment and those patriotic explosions couldn't have looked any cooler! I think it was the craziest fireworks display I've ever seen! Plus, we both got the day off! Today feels like Sunday. The Shappy Birthday show went well and the Dark Future Slam was really cool and awesome! Today me and snoo are gonna putz around NYC. Hope all y'all have a great weekend before the earth somehow gets knocked off it's axis and starts heading for the sun!

Last night was the kind of night I dig at the BPC. A nice happy hour, a big crowd for the early show, a nice break before the next show, then, Poetry+Karoke=FUN! then a early-ish closing a good ring at the bar and good tips for Mr. Shaps. Dropped by Meow Mix to visit the ladies then came home, ate a big sandwich and watched the special edition of Something About Mary. I slept on the futon so that I wouldn't wake up a snoo. Snoo's on her crazy yoga cleansing thing which drives me nvtz! I have no dinner date for a week! BOOOO! She better be off it by Wednesday cuz we have big date to see our most anticipated summer movie release Pirates of the Carribean! (rated "ARRRRRRH!) Cristin was obsessed with County Bears last year so it makes sense she would be excited for yet another movie based on a amusement park ride! I'm trying to convince her to actually go to Disney World sometime. That would be awesome. Speaking of awesome, Finding Nemo is probally one of the best movies I've seen all year! A little trumatic for kids, especially a kid like Cristin who cried A LOT! (actually I cried some too!)
