SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

Wednesday, April 30, 2003

All kinds of crazy news! Last night Beau tells me that he got the phone call on Sunday that Def Poetry on Broadway closes this upcoming Sunday! This sucks on so many levels but mostly because it fucks them up in the Tony nominations. Obviously, if you haven't seen this show this is your LAST CHANCE EVER to see poets performing thier own work on a Broadway stage! Speaking of Def Poetry, Cline has put my HBO appearance on the video page of this here website so if you don't have HBO (like me) here's your chance to see me rocking it on the show. There is another new video up there as well which might take some time to load but it is a short film about a typical Shappy day which has been recently used as an ad for the BPC on NYC cable! Thursday is the big Urbana finals you do not want to miss this! We got the whole night to slam and party so come on down and help me cheer on my Snoo! I am working on a new DVD project that could be ready by June! I'll keep you posted! Also there are some pictures of me doing The Bowery Improv Poets show if you type in www.uncleshappy.com/images . WHEW!

VICTORY(but at what cost?)

So I got in the Bar 13 finals! I also drank way too much! As a result, I got all Drunky Mc Talks Shit. Cristin, don't be sore at me!

Tonight's my last shot at making it on to a NYC slam team. It's the Bar 13 semi-finals (7pm 13th & University). I go 4 rounds against Marty Mc Connell, Ishle Yi Park, Claudia Allick and Ed Garcia. I'm not sure what my plan of attack is quite yet. The biggest challenge is to not go crazy for 2 for 1 drinks at the bar! I think I'm going a little crazy from being in the apartment for the last 3 days! This could be the edge I need to win!

I've heard that I did well on the show but I have not seen it for myself. I probally won't see it til next Thursday when Urbana Finals rolls around. What a drag! The weather is beautiful today but Cristin is at a baby shower in Sleepy Hollow. I sit here watching DVD's and eating mac and cheese. Just like every good American!

Well, my friends, tonight is my big DEF POETRY premiere! Be sure to tune in at 12:30 central! Looks like I'll be getting lots of videos of the show! I hope I get one tomorrow! Meanwhile I'll be slinging drinks at the BPC. Speaking of which, I lost the semi-finals last night which means no Urbana this year for Shappy. Not only that but the mighty Taylor Mali is out of the running as well! Still 4 guys and 4 gals makes for a groovy finals and I of course will be rootin' for Cristin! Plus, I still have a shot at Bar 13 this Monday so come on down!

NRDZ REPRESENT: I'M GOING TO BE ON HBO THIS FRIDAY!!!

At least that's what I've heard! I don't have cable, so if anybody out there with cable can tune in and confirm that I was on (or possibly even tape it) I would very grateful. It will be on Friday night/ Sat morning at half past midnight.

Also, tomorrow I'm competing at Urbana's last semi-finals. If I win, I'm in the finals, so I need all the fan base I can get! Plus, I am taping that night for a new DVD project. So please come on out! Please!

Tonight, me, snoo and the Saylor Mali duo saw "A Mighty Wind." Both snoo and I agree that it is smarter than the average comedy, but lacked the dramatic arc of Mr. Guest's earlier films. Plus, no weiner dogs in this one! Not one! Which reminds me: this Sunday could possibly be Weiner Dog Day in Washington Square, but we are hoping for rain (the rain date is the following Sunday) since Cristin has a baby shower that day.

So in conclusion: Mighty Wind gets thumbs up, watch on Friday and come and celebrate with me tomorrow at Urbana!

ps - I'm going to be on TV!!

Turn off your TV week? Not on your life, bub! Not after all the DVD's I aquired on the cheap! Best Buy had The Matrix and Matrix Revisited for 22 bucks and I got a copy of True Stories for 6.99! I also got the Family Guy set! But on the down side I fell asleep on the futon watching my video bounty and snoo got upset that I didn't come to bed. I'm sorry, snoo! I promise to come to bed from now on! Now to watch Season 3 of STNG!

Again, I wrote a post and again it disappears with an accidental button slip-up! Curse these damned computing machines! Hope all enjoyed the Holiday Season! I spent the weekend with Cristin and her fam! Had a dee-lish turkey supper on Saturday (Thanx Mrs. A!) and went for Dairy Queen after! Man, I loves Peanut Buster Parfait! We dyed eggs and just sniffing that PAAS dye took me back! It was a nice relaxing weekend. I am now plowing through Star Trek Next Gen Season 2! I traded DVD's with a fellow nerd poet named Reid Harris Cooper. Urbana semi's are this Thursday, I plan to have fun and read some goofy new material. Bar 13 semis after that. Land O' Goshen!

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!

Well, the club survived the People's Poetry Gathering. Me so proud of my staff! So when I get to work I find a sketch that says "Hello from Chicago" and it's signed Chris Ware! That's right! Chris "Acme Novelty Library" Ware was in the club while I was gone! Poop! Still, I got a cool sketch to hang in my "Man Den". Also my bro and his goodwife Kate sent me a bunch of framed photos of lil Luke(my nephew)! Thanks guys! Could his head get any bigger? I love babies! He's all chubsy! I can't wait to see him again! Also I'm going to be featured on NYC cable in an ad for the Bowery Poetry Club! My star is rising!

I'M BACK FROM TEXAS, Y'ALL!!!

Left Friday morning and got back late last night. I'll try to summarize as best I can.

Friday- Sat next to the most annoying woman who never stopped talking. Thank God I passed out! Cline got me at the airport we went straight to Hogwild which is the best vintage toy store in these here United States! The owner was back and he cut me a deal on a massive shopping spree! Then Thai food I had something called Love and Tears that had me weeping thrughout the meal. Then we watched I love the 80's all night on VH1 and drank Shiner Bock!

Saturday-Had some time before hitting the road to head back to Hogwild for a garage sale. I scored a Peanuts lunch box and some Superman 2 glasses. Then we went to a another yard sale run by angry Vietnam vets who asked Ernie "What's a Weezer?" (he had a Weezer shirt on) I got a snoopy wall hanging and Susan got some nice porn. We then all piled in a car to go to Conroe for the Bluebonnett Slam-top prize-$1000! I came in second place-$500! Rives won first place but did pick up our check at IHOP later. At least I broke even this trip. That's a good thing.

Sunday- Suzie made breakfeast tacos! Yay! Then we saw Ghosts of the Abyss in glorious 3D! It was pretty trippy! Ernie tried to show me some nerd store but it was closed down. In fact a lot of great shops in Austin are just vanishing. They have a campaign called keep Austin weird. Gentrifcation's a bitch! Then it was the Austin slam-off which was loaded with talent everyone was like within a point of each other. I believe there was a 3 way tie for 6th place or something. Not for me though! I went 21 seconds over time and fucked myself out of the next round! Me and Danny Solis got to do a loser's show case anyway.Guess who won? RIVES! The Doctor Doom to my Reed Richards! Can nothing stop this man? Went back to Ernie and Susan's and watched Ernie's treasure chest of video oddities! Also, I saw Run, Lola, Run for the first time. Good flick.

Monday- Squeezed in one more nerd shop with Ernie before getting on the plane. It was a true Junk Shop. Stuff crammed everywhere. Still I got some McDonald's glasses and some 8-trax, Ernie scored a rare x-rated Atari cartridge worth $100! I had a 6 hour flight with nothing but Slim Jims and candy bars to eat. Got home and kissed a Snoo! Then went to our local diner for a late supper. The end.

Thanks to everyone in Austin- Ernie and Susan, Hillary and Gen, Jeff and Toni, Mikey and Pony, everyone who bought my chap-book, and the fine folks of Conroe who dug my crazy poetry!

Well, we're all a little bit richer after this past weekend! Cristin collected her prize money and I sat back and realized what a special lady she always has been. It's just soooo gratifying to see the love o' me life get her due! Cristin looked great and was very classy and composed during a very odd "press conference" as the whacked out producer of MONSTER'S BALL stumbled his way through the awards ceremony. No matter, her folks were pleased as punch, despite sitting through a "Diversity in Film" panel discussion. Afterwards, me and Cristin went to a swanky cocktail party in a penthouse apartment and ate foo-foo food and beverages. Afterwards, Cristin's folks took us to Steak & Ale for a fine meal! Oh, How I love prime rib! Cristin made the Philadelphia Inquirer the next day (if you didn't see it above, check it out here) and they also did a staged reading of her screenplay! I found out when I compete in the semi-finals at Bar 13 -- that'd be April 28 -- drop by and support the old nerd! Def Jam called and asked me for suggestions for edits. This is good news I guess, otherwise they'd cut me all together. Keep in mind, there are 7 episodes and they taped like 70 some poets. I wrote another sketch for Beau Sia's WHATEVER and this one felt like it was pretty well recieved. It was about Pac-Man and Mario meeting in a bar and lamenting thier video game past. I am very excited to go to Austin this weekend. Despite all the war crap going on it's nice to know that all kinds of nice things can happen. However, it would be nice if George Bush contracted SARS in France.

Sorry I haven't updated in so long everybody! Getting ready to go to Philly tonight. Cristin's big deal is tomorrow. I'm gonna wear a tie for the first time in years! The sketch I wrote for Beau's show was a version of Spock's death from Trek 2. Beau got mad when I said most HUMAN with him. I ruined his Shatner moment. I can't help myself! I love the Shatner! I found gold again at the Entertainment Outlet! Right now I'm watching Flash Gordon. Why hasn't this got the DVD Special Edition treatment? Little known fact-Flash is comics artist Alex Ross favorite movie! I won the slam this week. Some of Norman Lear's people were in the crowd looking for subversive poetry types for some America poetry thingy. This means I am now in the Semi-finals for Urbana BUT I gotta win it to get into finals I think. Speaking of slamming, the Slam Masters are meeting in Chicago as I write this debating rules and regulations. It's pretty boring stuff but it is fun to see everybody. Normally Cristin and I would be there but she won 10,000 dollars and I'm off to Austin next week to slam for money so I'll get all of my poetry chatter in then. Keep checking out Def Poetry on HBO to see if I show up! It's on every Friday at 12-30 am!
