SHAPPY'S ONLINE DIARY:

As an anniversary surprize Cristin took me to see opening preview night of RUSSELL SIMMONS DEF POETRY JAM ON BROADWAY. That is after one the worst meals either of us had had in a long time at Howard Johnson's! But the decor was awesome! So, here is the cast of the show-Beau Sia, Black Ice, Staceyann Chin, Steve Colman, Mayda Del Valle, Georgia Me, Suheir Hammad (1st Palestinian woman on Broadway!) Lemon and Poetri. I list the cast for two reasons, first to let you see how stellar the talent is in this show, I count 4 National Slam Champs, and second to increase traffic to MY WEBSITE! GENIUS!

Seriously, folks, the show is pretty cool. Like watching the Ultimate final round of Nationals without all the tension and judging and what-not. Each poet does a solo piece to establish thier persona. Then there are some group pieces, a few more solo pieces and a cool hip-hop closer for the first act (Staceyann Chin RAPPING!)
The second act is more thematic. The poets each do thier take on love. Then they all come out and sit around the stage and do thier most political or personal conviction poems. It all comes to a close with all the poets, each from diverse backgrounds, doing a piece called "I Write America".

Some of my favorite moments include:

-the cool little headsets that the poets got to wear-I want one!
-Beau coming on stage to "Boys Don't Cry" by the Cure in a hilarious sweater and then putting Cristin's name in his poem (yes, she flipped out!)
-Lemon and Mayda's duet about Tito Puente-you should these two move!
-Steve Colman calling Gulianni a terrorist in NYC, ON BROADWAY!!! RIGHT ON!

Afterwards, me and Cristin and Beau and Nancy went to get some real food and chat about the show. Beau says it'll be a different energy once the show opens for real. The crowd last night really dug the show, but I guess it was mostly friends and families and freebies. I hope the show is a big hit. It's the most subversive thing to hit Broadway in years! Hooray for POETRY! GO SEE THIS SHOW! and scene.

Man o man! The Bowery Poetry Club has been enjoying some banner nights lately! And that means more $ for me to blow on stupid stuff! For instance, yesterday I aquired a complete Peanuts hardcover collection published by Mattel (?!?) They are 2 books in one when you flip em over! All this joy for under $40! Good Grief! I also got the Spidey DVD early! Now I am at Cristin's cuz it's my day off so, why not hang around someone else's pad for a change? I think I'm gonna make me sweetie dinner! Ah, zee recipe for love!

Man, I loves me some DVD's! The Simpson's season 2 is so much fun! The commentary is funny and cool to listen to. It's all so nerdy! So we have Jim Carroll reading at the club friday and saturday. Most people seem to think that he's not going to show up! Next week is Baraka-that should prove interesting. Cristin is plugging away at revising a screenplay so needless to say she is being a tiny baby hermit living on Cookie Crisp cereal and watching Dr. Phil! Looks like I'm gonna stay in tonight as well. Lots of zines and comix to read, movies to watch and I found a bunch of view-master reels I bought and never looked at! YOW! I am not tending to my Nerd duties!
Beth Lisick read at Urbana last night. She was awesome! Her baby Gus is super-cute! She is in town for a while so she promised to play Scrabble with me and Cristin! Hoo-ray!

In case you haven't noticed, my sweet, snarky, gal pal has taken over the last few updates. AND YES, I have been lazy. I take this time to thank jOEL, kRY & all Chicago cronies who made my visit so cool and fun! Also know that Chi-town will always be a place that I will come back to every year!

I'm at my snoo's, watching TV and blah blah blah Cristin's writing this anyway so who cares. right? I mean why should I "Shappy" volunteer a single word to "write" when it's Cristin doing all the typing. Me, I just laugh and tell Cristin about every movie I want to see the moment the ad comes on tv. Ooooooh, I want to see "Auto Focus!" Ooooooh, I want to see "Punch Drunk Love." But when Cristin wanted to see "Country Bears" (Starring Christopher Walken as the villian, motherfuckers!!), oh, THEN I was too busy. Too busy and too poor to see "Country Bears." But am I too poor to say, I dunno, buy a Oompaloomp Tee-shirt? No, I'm not to poor then. Appartently fun-loving, jug-playing fun-loving bears rank lower on the affection-scale than midget SLAVES.

"Snoo, you're nuts" quoth King Doesn't-Type!!

When if I'm nuts, then you're lazy nuts.

I'm still in Chicago (much to my snoo's sadness) but man, what a great trip it has been! The college gig at Illinois State was awesome! I got to judge After-dinner speaking (in which I was the National Champion of in 91) with my old high-school speech coach Ric Roe! That's right, Mom! Ric Roe! Then me, Krystal, Lucy and Eitan did a little poetry show for the kids! Man, they ate it up! I can't remember having such a responsive audience! I felt like Elvis for Chrissakes! Thank you Joel for such a great gig! The next day Krystal had me launch an all-ages show. These teens were fantastic! Great poetry, songwriting and singing! Looks like there's a good chance this thing will take off! Also, I got to say Hi to Tara Betts and Joanna Marshall who both read some great new stuff. Then on to the Green Mill where I thought I'd have to slam to sell books but instead was asked to a mini-feature! Awesome! The owner even slipped some dough! Thank you, Green Mill! I then slipped off to do a comedy show at Coyle's. Wasn't the best show but I did get to see some pretty funny stuff from old pals and new voices! I then came home and promptly fell asleep! I now am off to Chicago Comics to trade in chap-books for Peanuts action figures! Yippee! I'm at The Note tonight for my last gig. I believe doors open at 7 or so! Excelsior!

THAT TODDLIN TOWN!

So I am back in Chicago this weekend! In fact, I am writing this on Krystal Ashe's computing machine! Last nite I had a show at the Lincoln Lodge with my old pal Jason Fever (www.jasonfever.com) It was great! He had this bit where he convinces the crowd that his is first time on stage and will they be his "super-fans" for that night and he has them all hold up signs and stuff and he re-enters in a KKK robe! Oh god! I peed myself! The gals at Quimby's were sore with me for not keeping in touch but we made up I think. I loaded up on all kinds of great zines and mini-comics. I totally miss Quimby's! Her variety is overwhelming! More later!

So Washington Square was overrun by wiener dogs this past Saturday. All these dog owners bring thier pooches to the park once a year to celebrate all things wiener dogs! Cristin was running to get to the park, then I lost her for like 10 minutes as snapped photos. Then we saw a wiener dog wearing a detective's cap! WALLINGFORD! I'd like to post the pix to this page. Maybe Cline can do it! Eh, CLINE?!?!? Anyhoo, the Buicknell gig was nice. I read one poem and sold 5 books! I can't wait to see all my old pals this weekend! Talk to you soon!

Well, I'm an idiot! Member how I was bragging how many hits a day I get and then I don't update this page in like a week? Oh well! Get ready for my triumphant return to Chicago this weekend! All of my upcoming shows are listed here on the page! Last Saturday was wiener dog day! Cristin went APESHIT! More later!

ZZZZZZZZZ!

I can't seem to wake up lately! Maybe all my crazy work week caught up to me or something. Plus, I keep having waking dreams that make me feel like I'm awake! Cristin fell asleep on me last night during an open-mic and said she dreamed of Star Wars toys! At last, I have de-programmed her! I'm all for sleeping all day anyway. Mostly jerks are around during the day, crowding up sidewalks and restraunts, causing traffic jams, etc. I've always been a night person. I think it's more fun and mysterious.Member how much fun it was to stay up late as a kid? Or to sneak out of the house? It stiil kinda feels that way, unless I'm tired! Well, me and Cristin are off to Bucnell U tomorrow! Then I head to Chicago next week! Excitement!
