Hey, I'm not Mr. Sour Grapes!
My last entry seems a little stupid. So many poetry slam types probally think I'm a jerk, or something. I am assuming that poetry slam types are actually read this. In fact, I am actually excited to see new poets step up to the plate this year! I love new voices and poetry slams and all that jazz! Personally, I am happy that I had the blessing to perform on the stage with other poets who somehow rose above the din and made it to the finals! The nationals have always been, in my opinion, a celebraton of people who don't fit in the margins of what Joe 6-pack and Mary Housecoat expect from their offspring. I love all weirdos and nerds! THE REVOLUTION IS CALLING YOU COLECT-WILL YOU ACCEPT THE CHARGES?

Tuesday, August 27, 2002 You know something? I really thought that winning the National Poetry Slam would somehow make my life a little different, a little more exciting. Instead it has made my life seem even more mundane or something. All I can think about is a quote from Daniel Clowes (creator of Ghost World) " Being the best cartoonist in the world is like being the best badmiton player in the world, nobody cares." Not that I'm depressed or complaining or anything like that. In fact, things are swell! Me and Cristin are planning some trips. My web pages are getting lots of hits and working at the club has been profitable of late. I guess it's the whole badmiton championship thing, I mean, slam championship thing! Monday, August 26, 2002 For some reason my web page is slow to open today. If you are reading this then I guess it's just the computer at my day job being all wonky! Sunday, August 25, 2002 I am living up to my promise to do nothing today. OOps, writing this means I've actually done SOMETHING! Actually, it has been a nice relaxing day. Friday, August 23, 2002 Celebrate good times? Yes, I WILL! Last night was our welcome back thingy at our home venue the BPC! Quite a big crowd. It was also Taylor Mali's book release party so he had quite a few fans and friends there. It was a bit sad that I had to be behind the bar the whole night but people welcomed me back with TIPS$!$!$! I was also officially made bar manager yesterday. Cristin has gone home for the weekend to see her familia. I will miss my lil' snoo! I have a dinner party tonight and I gotta bartend Saturday. Sunday will be a much needed day to do NOTHING! A lot of poets want me to do a gossip column for this year's NPS. Tuesday, August 20, 2002 Had a great set at Nell's last night. In fact, one of the casting agents from Def Poetry was there and told me I did a good job. Good enough to be on HBO? We'll see! It's a nice feeling to know that I am comfortable in front of pretty much any crowd. My poems are now solidly inside my brain like they have never been before. I guess it's from all the practices and slams from the last couple of months. It's hard to fathom this, but there hasn't been a week of my life in the past 3-4 years that I haven't heard a poem being read! Isn't that MIND BLOWING? SUCCESS! SUCCESS!
Well, we won the got-dam National Poetry Slam! Well, technically it was a tie between Urbana (us) and Detroit(them). It's kinda like having two teams win the SuperBowl. Not that I would know what that is like cause I'm a nerd and I hate sports! I ended up in 11th place over-all. They only take 10 poets to semi-finals. Them's the breaks I guess! iT WAS an out-of-body experience performing in front all those poets and the like! WOWZA! The nerd slam was a big hit as well! Nerd poets from across the country now have a home on the web at www.spokennerd.com! Check it out! I guess I should be feeling more victorious or something. Maybe after someone buys me a drink!

CHILLIN' IN MINNIE-SODA!
Well, we won our first bout last night! As it stands, we are currently ranked in the top ten out of 56 teams! I am ranked 12th(?) out of all the indie poets! But more importantly, me and Cristin are having a really fun time despite her visit to the ER on on Monday. Her little tiny kidneys were being all wonky! She is resting and taking her medicine. I am her wet nurse! Tonight, we are up against Alaska, Corpus Christi and Long Beach -- which is also a number one ranked team!! That means that tonight will be intense. Tomorrow we hope to go to the Mall of America and visit Camp Snoopy. I traded some "Shap"- Books at Big Brain Comics and got "God Hates Cartoons" an animation DVD featuring Sam Henderson! The vibe here is really chill and everybody seems to be having a really good time. Wish me luck for tonight, and I'll update you tomorrow after I host the Nerd Slam!!!

I'M GONNA BE A REAL HONEST TO GOD UNCLE!
My brother and his wife Katie are expecting a baby boy this X-mas! At last, some tiny baby will get all of my Steve Austin toys! Wait a minute, I'll hold on to those for a while! Things are CRAZY right now! Only 3 days til Nationals! I still have to get my book together! In fact I'm at Kinko's with LuckyDave right now! The team made a trip to Boston for the East Coast Regionals where we kicked much ass. Very fun time. I hope to update as Nationals rolls along. Wish me luck!

Tuesday, August 06, 2002 We lost to Jersey by 0.8 ! No big deal- it was thier venue, after all. The crowd was handing out 10's like it was the final round of Nationals. Nell's is the where I read "Butterfly" for the Slam America tour hence the video on this page. I'll be featuring there August 19th. It's hard to fathom how poetry has taken control of my life sometimes! I feel like a poetry robot for Christ's sake! Monday, August 05, 2002 Well, the Shap-book is almost ready! Loaded with cool drawings and poems and a foreward from none other than John S. Hall! This weekend was nice and mellow. Spent all day Sunday relaxing and reading at Paradise Cafe with me sweetie. Hard to believe Nationals is but a scant 9 days away! It'll be super-cool to hang out with all of my poetry pals! Saturday, August 03, 2002 Round #3 of regionals was at Nuyorican Poet's Cafe last night and the results are each team won in thier own venue! Oh well, that was a first for Urbana Cristin tells me(Urbana winning at Urbana-that is). So overall rankings would have Nuyo 1st Urbana 2nd and Bar 13 3rd. Had a very sweet dinner with Cristin last night. Ended up at a diner to avoid the rain and saw an Elvis impersonator avoiding the rain as well! Awesome! posted by Shappy at 2:01 PM
Thursday, August 01, 2002 Well, tonight is round 2 of Nyc Slam Regionals at Urbana/BPC. Everyone has to bring all-new material to the slam. So tonight ought to be real interesting. The team also made it into the Scrabble newsletter. It's the same photo that's in my gallery. It's pretty funny to see us among all the Scrabble die-hards! Ernie and I have a new web site in the works as well. More on this as things get settled. Also a shout-out to all the kind folk who have called or e-mailed in regards to the web site-Chris (cal) -my brother, Kathy O'Neil, Josephine, Cordellia, John, Mom & Dad and everyone who has posted to the message board!
