Wednesday, July 31, 2002 I keep checking my own diary to see if it's been updated! I guess I should hire someone to write my diary entries! Well my slam team was defeated at the first NYC Regional Slam. On the plus side I won the betting pool! We didn't lose by much. I think each team will probally win in thier home venue. Friday, July 26, 2002 Well, I have no plans for the weekend and suits me just fine! Cristin decided to go to Philly to visit her pals so that leaves me to my own nerdy devices. I have lots of stuff to do. I need to work on my new chap-book for nationals, I need to set up the bookstore at BPC, I have a stack of books to go through (including The Comics Journal Interviews with Jack Kirby!) plus I finally got my Mr. Show DVD! AN EVENING AT 10-FORWARD!
Well, my friends, last night was pretty cool. The BPC has this composer named Butch Morris in residence every Tuesday which has been pretty lucrative for me because avant-garde jazz lovers drink a lot of top shelf hootch! I had noticed that Avery Brooks was on the permanent guest list and he hadn't showed up yet. . .until last night! That's right my fellow nerds- I SERVED CAPTAIN CISCO FROM DEEP SPACE NINE! He was very smooth and tipped me $10 on $5 drink! Classy! So that's celeb #3 I've served at the bar! The first 2 were Lisa Ling and Joan Jett! Live long and prosper!

Monday, July 22, 2002 I'm in a bit of a funk today. Listening to Radiohead isn't helping matters any. It's all about being 33 years and looking back at missed oppurtunities and working too much and not letting the ART out of your stupid brain. I've been staring at a blank notebook trying to write something witty then doing a TV guide cross-word puzzle then writing a poem about the TV guide cross-word puzzle. Christ! Friday, July 19, 2002 How pathetic is it that I have worked in bookstores for almost 15 YEARS!?! You name a chain I've worked it. Except for Borders and Walden and B Dalton. Whatever, did I mention 15 YEARS? The work is pretty easy and the staff is always filled with characters. It just that the pay sucks and even if you get promoted the pay still sucks! Still, what can I say I fuckin' love books! And the discount is pretty good. Still, I can't believe I've worked in bookstores that long the best stores I worked at will always be Chicago Comics and Quimby's (see LINKS PAGE) Can you tell I'm contemplating quitting my day job? posted by Shappy at 12:25 PM
Thursday, July 18, 2002 Well, what can I say? ARACHNAPHOBIA was way better! Maybe I'm just an old fogie but sci/fi and horror films were way better in the 80's. Now everything is so derivitive! I mean, the last two Star Wars films can't hold a candle to the first two! I blame it all on CGI which I think looks too fakey! I've been working a lot this week which is cool money-wise but not so fun other-wise.Today is a rare afternoon off. Tonight is the singer/songwriter slam. Wednesday, July 17, 2002 Man, I am super-psyched to see me some giant spiders! That's right, me and me gal are gonna see the shit out of 8 legged freaks! I just love movies like this! Tremors was so good! I also can't wait to see Reign Of Fire! Is it me or do the dragons look like the dragon in that classic 80's flick DRAGONSLAYER? Monday, July 15, 2002 Hello, my friends! Sorry for not updating in about a week but you know how it is when friends are in town! Krystal and Joel showed up on Tuesday night with Lucy. I had to work but Lucy sat at the bar and we caught up. Then Joel and Krystal and I went for drinks at a little bar called The Magician where we listened to Sammy Davis Jr. sing the theme to the Jefferson's on the jukebox! Crazy, man! The next day I took Kry and JC around NYC mainly to all the nerdy places I haunt. Ended up at the GIANT TOYS R US in Times Square and I found the elusive Troy McClure Simpson's figure I"ve been looking for! Kry and JC went moseying solo as I went to pick up Ernie and Susan (from Austin) from the airport. Cristin and I took them to CHAT-N-CHEW for dinner and met up with the rest of the gang for merriment. The next night was the grudge match in which more out of town poets showed up to do battle (Nick Fox, Ray Davies, Dawn Saylor, Gregg Bliss) I had to tend bar and compete at the same time. When I got called up to slam I was serving a drink and had to run up on stage where I suddenly became very dry in the throat and,needles to say, I flubbed up my poem left and wrong! However, I still got one of the highest scores of the night. Taylor and Cristin were freaking out that I f'd up meanwhile I was simply basking in my PURE POETIC GENIUS! The rest of the weekend was spent in Conneticut at Taylor's sprawling summer house. Cristin and I caught frogs and saw no less than 2 shooting stars! There was lots of late night Scrabble and us nerdz watched a bootleg of Attack of the Clones on Ernie's laptop. Ernie and I also tweaked the web page so you'll see some changes the next couple of days. The message board will be up soon, I promise! Now it is back to the grindstone where I sell stupid books that I didn't write to stupid Wall St. idiots and then serving drinks to non-tipping jazz lovers! WHEEEE! posted by Shappy at 2:32 PM

Monday, July 08, 2002 Well, I survived the weekend with the parents! Swam in the Atlantic, ate fresh crabs, watched fireworks on a boat and went to a mall! The mall was having a baseball card and comic book show! Kismet, baby! Today I had a big audition for Bravo! I don't wanna jinx it cuz I'll find out today if I get the gig or not! OOOOH! SUSPENSE! Wednesday, July 03, 2002 The critic's have spoken! Well, mainly Cristin, who says that my postings here suck and that they are boring and that no one will ever want to come back to this page and read this diary. She says I have to build suspense. I have no idea who is reading this outside of Cristin and my family. In fact, they might be the ONLY people reading this! So today me and Cristin are going to her folks place for the 4th o' July. I can't wait to get out there and fight her old man to the death, which appearently is a family tradtion whenever a new boyfriend comes around. Tuesday, July 02, 2002 I live in an oven! I have a supercheap apartment. However, one reason it is so cheap is because- I HAVE NO WINDOWS! It's what they call a railroad apartment. Why they call it that I have no idea. I can crack open a door to my roomate's room and some of his sweet, sweet air conditioning seeps in, but not much! It's all fans and spray bottles. Today I saw an ad for a portable air conditioner-$699! I feel bad for my out of town friends who are visiting next week. Since moving to NYC I have had a quite a few "Perfect Days" and yesterday was no exception! Got up late with my lady, we went to brunch with an old friend of her's and then me and Cristin watched the Gay Pride Parade go by. We got a little misty-eyed at the sight of p-flag.
I think Cristin got a little "excited" at the sight of all these hot gay guys writhing to disco on a hot day. It didn't exactly boost my self-confidence, but who cares?!? We smooched a lot and then Cristin went to meet a friend to see the WNBA Liberty game and I went off to a comic book convention in Madison Square Garden! Spent way too $ to get in but got some cool videos and t-shirts! Then I went to the Parkside Lounge for the gig with Big George it was still happy hour! Woo-Hoo! Cheap Beer! Played some Trivia Whiz,did a nice set, saw Big George's AMAZING one-man show, got a ride home from a friend, got home,got the National Slam draw from Krystal, ate a big sandwich and watched old Superman cartoons, talked to my snoo on the phone and dozed off! Sigh! This weekend me and Cristin are visiting her folks. Should be fun! I'm pretty sure her old man is gonna make me nail wood and stuff.
